  1. 1. Is Windows Phone the Answer for the Microsoft-Based Office?The powerhouses of the iOS and Android operating systems currently dominate thesmartphone marketplace. However, there is a new player on the field that is rapidly gainingan appreciable fan base: the Windows Phone. Boasting an operating system and design thatare substantially different from both the iOS and the Android, the Windows Phone is toutedas the mobile device for the Microsoft user base.Unless you’ve been under a rock lately, you know that the 2013 International ConsumerElectronics Show is underway this week. Among the many announcements being made bytechnology powerhouses at the show, both Sprint and Samsung announced WindowsPhone offerings. Clearly, the phone has appeal for consumers but what about its benefits ina corporate environment?Given that most businesses use Microsoftsoftware daily, is this phone the logical choicefor corporations nationwide? To answer thisquestion, we must look at the capabilities of thephone itself, as well as the types of mobilestrategies that businesses are currentlypursuing.The Windows Phone was built to work well withthe Microsoft suite of products, particularly thenew Windows 8 operating system. Withapplications for both MicrosoftOffice and Microsoft Dynamics, the phoneshould be immediately attractive for businessesgiven the prevalence and functionality of those programs. However, this device has steepcompetition from its Android and iOS counterparts for this same functionality. While theseproducts may not offer direct integration, both offer powerful word processing and CRMprograms. Additionally, Microsoft is rumored to have an office application for iOS ready forrelease sometime early this year. Because apps continue to be released every day that addfunctional value across every mobile operating system, proprietary applications do nothold significant appeal.But what about the value of a direct integration with Microsoft Windows OS? The value ofthat proposition begins with companies incorporating the integration directly into theirbusiness strategy. In the recent past this was not a problem, as many companies wouldprovide employees with mobile devices. However, with the advent of the “bring your owndevice” trend, this strategy is quickly becoming outdated. Because employees use their own
