The wine has a way of charming everyone. Reds and whites make our mouth
water. But where does it get all it’s charm from?
It’s because of the oak barrels that they’re stored in. It wouldn’t be wrong to
say that wine and oak have a bond that is for eternity. Wine spend most of
its life in the oak barrels since it is fermented and aged in them, may it be
new or used wine barrels.
The oak adds aroma and flavor along with making it richer and fuller in
terms of complexity. Depending on the time that the wine has spent in the
barrel, it will tickle your nose with the scents of nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon,
etc. When the wine reaches, the tongue it provides rich flavors of caramel,
coconut, butter and so many more!

Factors that will determine what flavor will be infused into the wine:
➔Where the oak is from
➔The quality of oak
➔How it was dried
➔How well it was toasted
➔Making of the barrel
Honestly, there are two main types of oaks that are used to make wine
barrels.
The American Oak barrel has a great impact on the flavors that the wine will
have. They are known to provide a sweeter after taste to the wines.
Generally, the barrels are cheaper and have wider grain and low wood
tannins.

The French Oak barrels are the barrels to go to for the best wine overall.
They have tighter grains and higher wood tannins which mean that the
aromas and flavors won’t be as strong but are still the best in the market.
A new barrel will definitely be able to do more for the wine than a used one.
But that doesn’t mean that the used wine barrel has become useless. It still
has a lot to give.
The type of toasting done on the barrel, along with the type of oak, will be
decided according to the wine that needs to be produced. Toasting can
range from light to medium to heavy. The lighter the toasting the lighter the
smokey flavor, whereas the heavier the toasting the heavier the smokey and
oaky flavor.
