This document discusses the concept of "Jugaad", which refers to improvised solutions born from adversity that have high social and environmental impact. It provides examples of Jugaad innovations like the inexpensive Nokia 130 phone, natural refrigerators created by Moroccan engineers, and using recycled water bottles filled with bleach and water for lighting. The document advocates embracing a Jugaad mindset of doing more with less to enable more people to meet basic needs in a sustainable way, such as by prioritizing effectiveness and efficiency over complexity. It lists six principles of Jugaad like using available resources and including margins to create value.

sellers
Nokia 130
The NOKIA 130, released in 2012, has sold more than 250
million copies.
This simple and inexpensive model (19€) is only used as
a phone, a flashlight, FM radio and MP3 player. Its
simplicity allows it to have an autonomy of up to 36
days. Ideal for people who don't have the budget to buy
a fully equipped smartphone or who are looking for an
object that allows them to meet two daily needs:
communicate and get light.
4. Have you ever put your bottles outside in the
middle of winter to cool them down?

In case of heavy heat, here is
another solution!
Go Energy Less
Raowia Lamhar, a young Moroccan engineer, and her
team at ENACTUS, has launched a range of 100%
natural refrigerators for production and use (= without
electricity) based on traditional Moroccan techniques.
Ideal for people living in rural Morocco, 45% of whom
still do not have access to electricity and have limited
purchasing power, which prevents them from
purchasing a "classic" refrigerator.
6. Have you ever put bleach in a water bottle to
make light?

When there is no light or
electricity, here is a solution...
Liter of Light
In 2011, the MyShelter Foundation created the program
Liter of light that aims to provide vulnerable
communities in the Philippines and around the world
with a cheap source of lighting that can be produced
and distributed locally. Recycled plastic bottles, filled
with water and some bleach, are installed in the roofs to
provide light during the day, and can be improved with
LED bulbs, micro solar panels and batteries to provide
lighting at night.
It has become an open source project!

ingenuity where it has sometimes been lost:
in particular in the development of products
and services.
