Remember to bring fresh flowers for the Flowering of the Cross, and we will
transform the old, ugly cross into a symbol of life and beauty.
Pondering from the Pastor’s Desk
Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! At long last it would appear that Winter
is on it's way out and we can begin to look forward to the longer and warmer days of Spring. Even with the
approaching pollen and it's partner, allergies, the blooming flowers and budding trees will soon make us forget
the harsh cold, snow, and ice. And with the coming of Spring, we also know that the darkness of the Lenten
season will give way to celebration of the Glorious Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. What a wonderful
time of celebration awaits us, even as we prepare for what will undoubtedly be a very busy time for
Westhampton Baptist Church as we begin to “make our move” to the Chapel at Derbyshire. This is truly a
unique time in the life of our Church, and it will take strong leadership and a committed membership to help us
navigate the waters that lie before us.
“Navigating the waters...” the Bible is filled with images and stories of water. From the “Great Flood” of
Noah's day, to the “river of the water of life, clear as crystal” that we read about in the Book of Revelation, water
has been and continues to be an important and necessary part of mankind. We need water to live, scientists tell
us that 90% of our bodies is water. Water is necessary, but it also can bring challenges. One of my favorite
passages in Scripture are centered on water, in fact it occurred on the Sea of Galilee, where Miss Sue and I were
just one year ago, where we personally witnessed how quickly the waters could change.
In Matthew 14, the disciples find themselves caught in a storm on the Sea of Galilee, but unlike in earlier
stories (Chapter 8), this time Jesus was not with them in the boat. He had stayed ashore to spend time with His
Heavenly Father, after yet another very busy day of preaching and healing, (which serves as a reminder to us to
spend time in prayer to our Father, or as I have said many times before, “if it's good enough for Jesus, it's good
enough for us as well!”). The disciples encountered rough waters and became afraid. Suddenly in the dim light
of dawn their fear of the waves was replaced by a NEW fear, as a ghostly apparition appeared to be walking
across the raging water toward their boat. They cried out in fear, but Jesus called out to them, “ Take courage!
It is I. Do not be afraid.” Jesus then encouraged Peter to get out of the boat and walk toward Him. Without
hesitation, Peter got out of the boat and begins to walk toward His Lord.
Two years ago when I was called to be your pastor, our seas at Westhampton were relatively calm.
There were some rough undercurrents,...we had weathered some storms, but our ship was pretty float-worthy.
But quickly our outlook changed... the roof was literally threatening to fall in on us. And we became fearful. We
experienced a great loss with the deterioration of our building, and we have had our season of “crying out” to
God. And Jesus heard our cries. Then when it became obvious we would have to leave this location, we
experienced a season of grief. Once again, Jesus responded and we have been blessed with new opportunities to
move forward at the Chapel at Derbyshire. Unlike Peter in the above story, we will not look at the waves, but
will keep our eyes and our focus on Jesus. Just as Jesus' resurrection brought new hope and new possibilities to
all who believe in Him, so too we are approaching a new season. Easter is a season of rebirth...a season of new
life. With this in mind, I am asking you to adopt our Life Verse for April AND May, Psalm 125:1 which reads,
“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.”
Happy Spring and Happy Easter!
Pastor Bill
Hello WBC family,
Spring is such a wonderful time of year to clean out those closets, donate clothes and household items to those
less fortunate. But what about your medicine cabinet? Take a few minutes & go through your RX bottles and
discard expired prescription medications as well as over the counter ones ( all have expiration dates). It is a
dilemma on how to discard safely but here are suggestions: empty medications in kitty litter or coffee grounds
with little water added in plastic bag and toss in trash. Do not flush down toilet as can compromise water
system. You can also take to your pharmacy for disposal. Your doctor may be in a federal program that
handles disposal of medications, just ask.
Now that your closets and medication cabinets are in shape, what else to do? Lets get outside and walk ! If
this doesn't excite you then be creative....walk your dog, walk your neighbor's dog, join a gym or the YMCA,
buy a workout DVD and get moving!! Ask a friend/family member to join you (accountability helps!) Spring
brings a newness with nature's beauty so let's be in that spirit with our bodies. Eliminate toxins such as sodas,
fried and fatty foods and sugary desserts for starters. Easy right? Wrong....we all have our weaknesses and
typically fall short of our good intentions. How about incorporating God in our plan?
Pray daily for strength to make healthier food choices and commit to an exercise regimen." Old habits die
hard" so why would we try to do this on our own? Give it up to God and see what He and you can do!!
If you need some nursing advise to get started, please email me at dwoverberg@gmail.com or ring me
(804)616 1688. As always, I will point you to your physician if you need true medical advise.
Good luck, God bless & happy Spring!

Please let the Church Office know so that we can recognize your achievement.

By the time you read this we will have celebrated our Risen Savior, spring will be in full swing and I hope
warmer weather.
Just a few items to remind you of as we go into spring cleaning mode, we would like to continue collecting
gently used clothing for Homeward. Our next event with Homeward will be in July so you have plenty of time
to clean out those closets. If you come across luggage, tote bags, backpacks we can use those as well.
If you are cleaning out furniture, linens or any household item please think of CARITAS before you donate to
the Goodwill or Salvation Army. I have access to a storage unit near my house and would be happy to take
items to the unit for you or arrange for you to meet us there or you can also drop off items at the church. This
mission is always in need to household items and it is a worthy mission.
As we think about vacation please remember to collect sample size toiletries, lotion, shampoo, conditioner,
soap, mouthwash, if you don’t use them. Any of these items can be used to make toiletry bags for the
homeless.
We will continue collecting items for our Food Pantry and soda tabs for the Ronald McDonald House.
Please have a Blessed year.

  • 2. Pondering from the Pastor’s Desk Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! At long last it would appear that Winter is on it's way out and we can begin to look forward to the longer and warmer days of Spring. Even with the approaching pollen and it's partner, allergies, the blooming flowers and budding trees will soon make us forget the harsh cold, snow, and ice. And with the coming of Spring, we also know that the darkness of the Lenten season will give way to celebration of the Glorious Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. What a wonderful time of celebration awaits us, even as we prepare for what will undoubtedly be a very busy time for Westhampton Baptist Church as we begin to “make our move” to the Chapel at Derbyshire. This is truly a unique time in the life of our Church, and it will take strong leadership and a committed membership to help us navigate the waters that lie before us. “Navigating the waters...” the Bible is filled with images and stories of water. From the “Great Flood” of Noah's day, to the “river of the water of life, clear as crystal” that we read about in the Book of Revelation, water has been and continues to be an important and necessary part of mankind. We need water to live, scientists tell us that 90% of our bodies is water. Water is necessary, but it also can bring challenges. One of my favorite passages in Scripture are centered on water, in fact it occurred on the Sea of Galilee, where Miss Sue and I were just one year ago, where we personally witnessed how quickly the waters could change. In Matthew 14, the disciples find themselves caught in a storm on the Sea of Galilee, but unlike in earlier stories (Chapter 8), this time Jesus was not with them in the boat. He had stayed ashore to spend time with His Heavenly Father, after yet another very busy day of preaching and healing, (which serves as a reminder to us to spend time in prayer to our Father, or as I have said many times before, “if it's good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for us as well!”). The disciples encountered rough waters and became afraid. Suddenly in the dim light of dawn their fear of the waves was replaced by a NEW fear, as a ghostly apparition appeared to be walking across the raging water toward their boat. They cried out in fear, but Jesus called out to them, “ Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.” Jesus then encouraged Peter to get out of the boat and walk toward Him. Without hesitation, Peter got out of the boat and begins to walk toward His Lord. We experienced a great loss with the deterioration of our building, and we have had our season of “crying out” to God. And Jesus heard our cries. Then when it became obvious we would have to leave this location, we experienced a season of grief. Once again, Jesus responded and we have been blessed with new opportunities to move forward at the Chapel at Derbyshire. Unlike Peter in the above story, we will not look at the waves, but will keep our eyes and our focus on Jesus. Just as Jesus' resurrection brought new hope and new possibilities to all who believe in Him, so too we are approaching a new season. Easter is a season of rebirth...a season of new life. With this in mind, I am asking you to adopt our Life Verse for April AND May, Psalm 125:1 which reads, “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.” Happy Spring and Happy Easter! Pastor Bill
  • 3. Hello WBC family, Spring is such a wonderful time of year to clean out those closets, donate clothes and household items to those less fortunate. But what about your medicine cabinet? Take a few minutes & go through your RX bottles and discard expired prescription medications as well as over the counter ones ( all have expiration dates). It is a dilemma on how to discard safely but here are suggestions: empty medications in kitty litter or coffee grounds with little water added in plastic bag and toss in trash. Do not flush down toilet as can compromise water system. You can also take to your pharmacy for disposal. Your doctor may be in a federal program that handles disposal of medications, just ask. Now that your closets and medication cabinets are in shape, what else to do? Lets get outside and walk ! If this doesn't excite you then be creative....walk your dog, walk your neighbor's dog, join a gym or the YMCA, buy a workout DVD and get moving!! Ask a friend/family member to join you (accountability helps!) Spring brings a newness with nature's beauty so let's be in that spirit with our bodies. Eliminate toxins such as sodas, fried and fatty foods and sugary desserts for starters. Easy right? Wrong....we all have our weaknesses and typically fall short of our good intentions. How about incorporating God in our plan? Pray daily for strength to make healthier food choices and commit to an exercise regimen." Old habits die hard" so why would we try to do this on our own? Give it up to God and see what He and you can do!! If you need some nursing advise to get started, please email me at dwoverberg@gmail.com or ring me (804)616 1688. As always, I will point you to your physician if you need true medical advise. Good luck, God bless & happy Spring! Diane Overberg, RN, Parish Nurse Celebrate Resurrection! Join us at 8:30am on April 4th for the Longest Continuously Running Westhampton Baptist Church Easter Activity Every year since 1984, members of our church have met for a time of fellowship on Easter morning, before Sunday School, in the gazebo on the island at the west end of the University of Richmond lake. No hymns. No preaching. No collection plates. No schedule. Bring your own breakfast. Feed the ducks and the geese and the fishes. Hot, cold, wet, or dry (sleep is over-rated) If you are interested? Just show up!!

  • 8. Shalom By the time you read this we will have celebrated our Risen Savior, spring will be in full swing and I hope warmer weather. Just a few items to remind you of as we go into spring cleaning mode, we would like to continue collecting gently used clothing for Homeward. Our next event with Homeward will be in July so you have plenty of time to clean out those closets. If you come across luggage, tote bags, backpacks we can use those as well. If you are cleaning out furniture, linens or any household item please think of CARITAS before you donate to the Goodwill or Salvation Army. I have access to a storage unit near my house and would be happy to take items to the unit for you or arrange for you to meet us there or you can also drop off items at the church. This mission is always in need to household items and it is a worthy mission. As we think about vacation please remember to collect sample size toiletries, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, soap, mouthwash, if you don’t use them. Any of these items can be used to make toiletry bags for the homeless. We will continue collecting items for our Food Pantry and soda tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Please have a Blessed year. Miss Sue WANTED!! THOUSANDS OF COOKIES!!! for the April Race at RIR We are asking that church mission groups, Sunday School classes, youth groups, etc. volunteer to make “homemade” cookies and bag these in small clear zip lock plastic bags with 2-3 medium sized cookies each.
