1. Martin Ford to deliver a keynote address at Industry of Things World 2015
Berlin, Germany, May 26, 2015 – Martin Ford’s evening keynote at Industry of Things World 2015
#IoTClan
Martin Ford is a Valley Entrepreneur, Futurist Speaker and a leading expert on
the Robot Revolution, Artificial Intelligence, Job Automation and the Impact of
Accelerating Technology on the economy and society.
Martin will join us at the Industry of Things World on the September 21-22 in
Berlin to share his views on:
The rise of Artificial Intelligence: Implications for jobs and the economy
We caught up with Martin recently for an interview and here is a sneak preview of what he will talk
about at the conference in September.
IoTClan:
Where do you see the IoT and its technologies creating the most impact?
Martin Ford:
I think the greatest impact is likely to occur when IoT is widely deployed in industry. This may be less
visible, and will almost certainly get less far media attention, than more consumer-oriented
applications. However, as equipment of all kinds is equipped with sensors and is able to be monitored
and maintained remotely and perhaps even completely autonomously using intelligent algorithms, the
overall impact on industrial efficiency could be quite dramatic. Smart software will be able to detect
and respond to inefficient operation and warn of potential failures long before even the most skilled
human operator would be able to do so. As this capability scales across virtually every industry, the
implications for areas like productivity, safety and energy efficiency could be immense. It’s very likely
that there will also be dramatic implications for employment, however, as fewer workers—especially
those with moderate skill levels—will be required.
IoTClan:
How do you see the future economy working?
Martin Ford:
In the long run, I think the advent of machine intelligence and robotics, as well as IoT, are sure to
perpetuate—and even amplify—the current trend toward increasing income inequality. Eventually,
this could lead to both social upheaval, as more and more average workers are left behind, and
economic stagnation as fewer and fewer consumers have the purchasing power necessary to drive
the economy. In Europe especially, there is already a high risk of deflation—and this could well
become an even bigger problem as technology continues to advance.
