Building a Barn FAQ
1. It is amazing how many people think building a wood barn is very
easy until they actually get down to doing it, that’s when the calls
start coming in to the professionals and usually that is after they
have made a mess of things. In this FAQ we attempt to give
answers to some of the questions that have arisen through our 25
years of experience.
What is the first step I should take before I build a storage barn?
You need to consider the size you would like to have and what it
would look like in the space you have available for the barn. Many
times people have started off building a barn only to find out it is
too small for the intended purpose and it is back to the drawing
board. Also you need to consider what it will look like, a poorly
constructed barn will just be a sore sight in your yard and in no
time you will be breaking it down.
What type of materials should be used?
I believe you would like your structure to remain standing for a
long time so you should go for the most durable wood that will
2. withstand the weather and an attacks. If you are dealing with
experts they will always be able to pick out the best wood for you
to use for whatever barn you would like to build.
Would I need a permit to put up a barn?
It may depend on where you are, different towns will have
different laws on permits, some towns may consider structures of
certain sizes exempted from acquiring permits but it is best to
contact the experts or your local authority to confirm if you need
one.
How can I tell you will do a good job?
A company does not survive for 25 years doing shoddy work, our
clients can tell you about the work we do and you can even look at
samples just to be sure.
How much will it cost?
The price varies according to the design, size and a number of
other factors however for a general price range you can check out
our rate card .
Do you build on site?
Yes we are able to build on site but in most cases we do most of
the work at the workshop and then assemble on site.
Do you do delivery?
Waterloo Structures deliver and install in the states of Maryland
DC, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware New Jersey and Virginia.
Is there any site specification?
Yes you will need to have a leveled site that is accessible to our
trucks especially if we are simply delivering built structures. For
more information on this you can read our site requirements.
3. Where can I get ideas for designs?
The internet is a good place to start and our website would be the
first recommendation. You can also look at what other people have
built and make a choice. The main thing is you will have to look at
that barn everyday so it is best to imagine what you would like to
have in your yard and then share that idea with the architect who
will draw it and we will bring it to life.
