In keeping up with new technologies, Symantec is excited to
announce being the industry's first certified vendor for
backing up SAP HANA®. SAP HANA is an In-Memory Database
(IMDB) appliance that is able to process data up to 10,000
times faster than traditional database applications. Because
of the large amounts of data being processed, the IMDB is
considered part of the Big Data landscape, and since industry
experts predict almost a quarter of Data Warehouse and
Online Transaction Processing Systems will be replaced by
IMDB's by 2016, now is the time to make sure a sound backup
and recovery strategy is in place for SAP HANA environments.
Key benefits
Most critical databases have a high availability/disaster
recovery solution in place to make sure they keep their
environment up and running, but it is just as important to
have a backup strategy for SAP HANA. Disaster recovery is not
enough. A proper integrated backup solution can complement
a disaster recovery solution for end-to-end data protection,
covering some scenarios disaster recovery doesn't take into
account. NetBackup for SAP HANA can resolve these gaps.
Being SAP HANA certified also allows NetBackup more

a modified SAP-NetBackup agent that can communicate with
SAP HANA through the Application Programming Interface
(API).

2. Features and specifications
SAP HANA comes in the form of an appliance and is offered on
hardware from a number of certified vendors. NetBackup
protection for SAP HANA is provided through the NetBackup
agent, which is installed on the appliance, and allows
NetBackup to communicate with the SAP HANA studio
management piece for SAP HANA. The SAP HANA
management piece and NetBackup communicate through the
SAP backing interface. This allows SAP HANA to send live data
streams to NetBackup, which uses an SAP policy to manage
the backed up data sets providing destination target(s),
retention, duplication, and replication for disaster recovery
purposes. Here are the requirements and supported software
versions for backing up SAP HANA with NetBackup:
SAP HANA requirements:
• Appliance running SUSE® Enterprise Linux (SLES) 11 SP1
• SAP HANA version SPS 05, rev 46 and higher
• Backing for SAP HANA Interface Version 1.04
• Appliance hardware from supported vendor (Fujitsu, HP®,
IBM®, Dell®, Cisco®, NEC, and Hitachi)
NetBackup requirements:
• NetBackup agent version 7.5.0.6 or later
• NetBackup agent for HANA installed on SAP HANA
appliance
• Configured SAP policy type in NetBackup for SAP HANA
backups
