1. CENTERRA ANNUAL COLOR PROJECT
PRESENTATION AND DESIGN BY:
2010
NICOLE COVINGTON &
VICTOR WOOD
2. Our intent for the annual color project at Centerra was to
create cohesive designs that linked all of the annual planting
beds together to give viewers a positive aesthetic experience.
By creating a strong design for the two larger beds at the main
entrance we were able to create an eye-catching entrance to
the shopping complex. Aspects of this design were also
intentionally mimicked throughout the rest of the beds around
the shopping center. Color juxtaposition, plant texture, and
varying height levels were considered for each separate bed to
insure a strong, yet effective design concept. Throughout the
design process we intentionally incorporated subtle elements to
give each viewer some sense of agriculture, which Centerra’s
landscape designs were based around. By using a radial, sun-
like design for the front beds, by incorporating field-like stripes in
DESIGN INTENT
the smaller beds, and by specifying plants such as cabbage
and kale we hope to give some sense of agriculture to our
designs.
We believe that our design concepts will appeal to not only
Centerra, McWhinney, and Valleycrest, but also to the visitors of
the Centerra shopping complex.

Editor's Notes
Design intent: Radial lines originating from center draws eye into center (to Centerra sign). Bright colors are eye-catching and effective when viewed from near or far. Gradient color schemes intertwined create an inverse effect with contrast. Multiple ways to view the flower beds: As you move by the beds each segment of planting bed creates a new scene. Natural colors, including white, and naturally flowing lines create a calming peaceful effect. Sunset in the mountains. Use of white and many other light, yet effective, colors creates contrast even with bright colors. Flower selection: Simple flowers selected, effectiveness lies in color scheme and gradation effect. Texture variation between background (marigolds) and stripes (petunias) will emphasize color and texture contrast, thus helping to ‘popping out’ stripes. Use of light colors contrasts and brings attention to Centerra sign, as well as contrasts with the green provided by turf.
Height variation/bloom times: Because of slope of hill the minimal height difference between plants will most likely not be noticed. Flowers bloom all season, with only marigolds needing dead-heading.
Design intent: Small beds leave little room for complex design, so a simplistic design for each bed was important. Simple, yet effective geometric shapes used. Height variation between plants in each bed will create visual interest. “Canopy” effect. Designed to be effective when viewed circling the roundabout in a car. Most likely situation. Colors selected to still flow and mimic main entrance bed scheme. Flower selection: Bright, full flowers selected insure visibility. Foliage plant piques visual interest.
Height/bloom time: Height plays important part in effectiveness of shape visibility. Larger height variations. Talk about Google: “Noticed one year you had petunias and they trailed down side of bed…”. Helps with height variation because it moves ‘down’. Plants bloom all season long.
Design intent: Small, irregularly shaped beds leave little room for complexity. Simple designs effective, yet again. Lines flow more with irregularity of beds. Single flower with bright visual interest in juniper islands contrasts with dull blues surrounding. Flower selection: Bright multi-colored zinnias will really pop out in surrounded by the junipers. Cabbage lining beds gives more of an agricultural feel. Colors between cabbage/dianthus are more dull than front beds and more natural feeling, much like the beds with Russian sage and ornamental grasses surrounding the beds.
Height/bloom time: Cabbages should be planted where they droop at a slight angle towards the roundabout. Zinnias should be tall enough that they are viewable over the junipers surrounding. Plants bloom all season long, with increased aesthetics from cabbages in the cooler months.
Design intent: Bed is relatively flat and is fairly far away from road, important to use large shapes, clear lines, and effectively contrasting colors. Lines and flowers play on an agricultural feel, with lines subtly mimicking crop fields. Colors meant to contrast and emphasize lines, including use of white again. Quick views from cars need solid flower cover and simple lines and colors. Flower selection: Single flower type used to create single texture since multiple would be too distracting, especially from further away. Blue color from adjacent veronica bed repeated in towards back of bed to connect two beds.
Height/bloom time: Plants are very low since elevation change from street to sign is minimal, did not want to block sign at all. Should mound up slightly higher than the veronica, creating tiered effect drawing eye in. Flowers cover plant all season long.
Design intent: More of a playful bed, able to do include more plants and complexity because of small size and placement area. Color variation, contrast, height variation, texture variation all utilized. ‘ Showcase’ of plants, detached concept from other beds. Striking at grand entrance. Flower selection: Multiple flowers smushed in together, treated like a large container garden almost. Kale and verbena give agricultural feel. Verbena from grass-like look they give. Color variation is playful and includes many colors all subtley related and cohesive.
Height/bloom time: Height of verbena and Rudbeckia does not interfere with line of vision of exiting cars. Height variation is drastic in small amount of width but still effective and intriguing. Trailing petunias at base of bed create ‘anchored’ feel. Flowers bloom year round. Foliage from kale intensifies in cooler months.
