1. VDIS10017 The Consumer and the Designer
students guide to studying this subject
This subject will be delivered by
Prof Ron Newman a practicing
designer who has been teaching
design for twenty years
2. Welcome to VDIS10017 the Consumer and the
Designer. No doubt you have arrived at this presentation
via our online Campus (the left hand image above) and so
my aim is to now lead you through our expectations for this
subject and the term of study.
3. Each lecture will be in two parts, a short Video explanation
and a longer text lecture in the form of a slide show. View
them both, consider their contents and then enter the
forum, take part in the discussions, and make comments
and watch and be involved as the discourse flows.
4. On the left hand side of the screen are menus that will take
you to different aspects of the class and they are self
explanatory; lectures, assessment tasks, subject outlines
and so on. The forum is the place where you will find
discussions about the various projects, tasks and ideas and
I encourage you to always subscribe to the threads and
become involved in the conversations.
5. Flying Over Las Vegas
Stephano Marzano
And overview of consumer behaviour
A lecture by Professor Ron Newman
6. The first lecture in this subject; Flying over Las Vegas
focuses on the role of the designer in the community and
what drives consumer behaviour in the market place. We
will review a conference paper presented in 1993 by
Stephano Marzano, which deeply influenced the way
designers viewed their role.
7. As I said earlier you will also be able to access the subject
outline and it contains the week by week guide that alerts
you to our expectations of your research, enquiry,
assessment tasks, design projects, essays, presentations
and so on.... Download this document and use it as your
constant companion guiding as to what is expected of you.
8. Each week there will be minor and major tasks to become
involved in and my recommendation is that you always plan
to spend some hours working within the subject and
engaging in the tasks and the discussions. We at Virtu will
keep the load sensible, but remember that the week by
week tasks are designed to progress your learning at an
understandable rate.
9.
10. The second lecture will talk about motivation, as well as
intrinsic and extrinsic influences on our behavior: why do
we respond the way we do to the design of
goods, communications and services. The lecture will
explore the thought processes behind our decision making
processes as consumers.
11. Two images with motivational value will be shown during
the lecture and a mini project will be set where students
are asked to find an image they believe is motivating and
to use that image along with a maximum of eight words to
create a motivational poster. This mini project is due at
the end of week 3.
12.
13. The third lecture will talk about Consumer Research and
the Design Process and will inform students about the
issues inherent in consumer research and how these
issues are addressed by professionals in the research and
design disciplines.
14.
15. In week 4 the first assessment task is due and the second
task will be posted and discussed. This second project
will focus on a case study on IKEA furniture considering
their unique selling points and brand equity.
16.
17. Marketing Concepts the fourth lecture of VDIS10017 the
Consumer and the Designer. This lecture will examine
Marketing theories as they apply to designers. It is
important that designers understand these theories and
practices because in the most part designers are working
directly with or for marketing professionals.
18.
19. And finally the fifth lecture will talk about Emergent Design
Methodologies and Ideas. I will talk about the earliest of the
design practitioners and about what they thought, through
to more recent ‘thinking’ and tender some of my own ideas
of where we will go in the future. Consider this lecture as
you understand how to undertake the last project, bringing
ideas such as Parkour to a community.
