1. Chemistry 2011-12
Mr. Thomas
Expectations
Academic, social and civic expectations (O.W.L.S.) as listed in Student Handbook will be the
guidelines for appropriate student conduct.
Additional guidelines for conduct in the science labs will be addressed in a separate handout.
Course Competencies
Students will demonstrate understanding and application of:
1) Units, unit analysis, and unit conversions as used in chemistry
2) Proper knowledge of laboratory methods specific to chemistry
3) The underlying principles of chemistry
4) Basic methods for modeling chemical and physical changes
5) The properties of solution chemistry and equilibrium
6) The properties of the chemistry of gases
7) Models of energy flow through a chemical system
8) The history and philosophy of science as it applies to chemistry and its role in society
Each competency is made up of six to ten sub-competencies, which demonstrate a process or
content skill crucial to success in chemistry
Units
1. Introduction to Chemistry
2. Analyzing Data
3. Atomic Structure
4. The Periodic Table and Periodic Law
5. Chemical Bonding
6. Chemical Formulas and Equations
7. The Mole
8. Mass Relationships in Chemical Reactions
9. Gas and Liquid Behavior
10. Mixtures and Solutions
11. Equilibrium and Reaction Rates
12. Acids Bases and Salts
13. Energy and Chemical Changes
14. Nuclear Chemistry
2. Grading
60% Tests, quizzes and projects
10% Class Participation
10% Homework
10% Lab Reports
10% Journals
Homework
You are expected to have your homework completed when you enter the room.
Homework missed due to excused or exempt absence is to be made up within 5 days of returning to
school.
Homework missed for reason other than excused or exempt absence may not be made up and will
result in a zero. If there are extenuating circumstances these are to be communicated to the teacher
before the start of class.
Long term assignments not passed in on time will have a grade reduction of 10 points per day late.
Notebook
Homework, class notes and handouts are to be kept in a 3 ring binder.
Daily journals are to be kept in a separate section of the notebook and will be evaluated at the end
of each term for the 10% Journal grade.
Extra help
Students having difficulty in any aspect of the course should make arrangements to obtain extra help
after school, at a time of mutual convenience.
