5. History of Addis Ababa
fountion
The history of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, formally begins with the founding
of the city in the 19th century by Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II and his
wife Empress Taytu Betul.Menelik, as Negus of Shewa, had
found Mount Entoto a useful base for military operations in the south
of his realm. His interest in the area grew when his wife Taytu began
work on a church on Entoto. In addition, Menelik endowed a second
church in the area. In 1881, Menelik moved the capital of Shewa from
Ankober to Entoto. It is where the African Union is headquartered and
where its predecessor the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was
based. It also hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Economic
Commission for Africa (ECA), as well as various other continental and
international organisations. Addis Ababa is therefore often referred to
as "the political capital of Africa" for its historical, diplomatic and
political significance for the continent. The city lies a few miles west of
the East African Rift which splits Ethiopia into two, and standing 7,726
feet (2,355 meters) above sea level, it is the third highest capital in the
world.
How didi it got its name?
Addis Ababa has always had the same name. It means "New Flower" in
the African language of Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia. .
The city is at the site of hot springs. The imperial palace, aristocratic
mansions, and military encampments formed the center of the early
city.

Legend has it that in the year 326, Queen Helena (Empress Helen) the Mother of Constantine the Great,
discovered the cross upon which Christ was crucified. Unable to find the Holy Sepulchre, she prayed for help
and was directed by the smoke from a burning fire as to where the cross was buried. After unearthing the Holy
Cross, Queen Helena lit torches heralding her success. In the Middle Ages, the Patriarch of Alexandria gave the
Ethiopian Emperor Dawit half of the True Cross in return for protection afforded to the Coptic Christians. A

Addis Ababa has a subtropical highland climate with precipitation
varying considerably by the month.[38] The city has a complex
mix of alpine climate zones, with temperature differences of up
to 10 °C (18 °F), depending on elevation and prevailing wind
patterns. The high elevation moderates temperatures year-
round, and the city's position near the equator means that
temperatures are very constant from month to month.
As such the climate would be maritime if its elevation was not taken into account, as no month is above 22 °C
(72 °F) in mean temperatures.Mid-November to January is a season for occasional rain. The highland climate
regions are characterised by dry winters, and this is the dry season in Addis Ababa. During this season the daily
maximum temperatures are usually not more than 23 °C (73 °F), 21
