Improving hospital avoidance for aged care residents,
Motor Cycle Ambulance Poster
1. Poor access to health facilities is one of the main
concerns of rural communities. Journeys to health
centers and hospitals are generally long, taking many
hours.
Transport of the pregnant women for delivery at
institution and seeking treatment for pregnant women
and neonates is often so difficult that trips are delayed
to the last minute, causing unnecessary suffering and
loss of life.
Again these situations are aggravated in the remote
and Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected districts like
Narayanpur.
UNICEF works in partnership with Ramakrishna Mission
at most difficult areas of Narayanpur District since 2011.
As an innovative project this has been initiated during
2015.
This innovative action was initiated to facilitate transfer of
cases to facilities where no health service is extended by any
agencies in Abujmarh region of Narayanpur District which is
densely forested areas with no roads .
Cases includes Pregnant women, chronically ill, malnourished
children and OPD patients where access and security is an
issue affecting the lives of women & children.
Performance: (April 2015 to August 2015)
Result
As a proof of concept UNICEF Chhattisgarh implemented the Motorcycle ambulances project at
Narayanpur Block of Narayanpur District, one of LWE districts . Implementation of the Pilot has confirmed
the potential, showing the trailer can provide an effective, low-cost ambulance service for transporting
pregnant women and sick neonates at the health facility and address issues of equity for the most
vulnerable tribal population of the state .
The trailer made motor cycle ambulance has been located at a village Sub health-centre and operated
mainly between the village and Narayanpur District Hospital.
Specification of the Ambulance
Materials & Methods
The “Emergency Transport Facility” through toll-free
number ‘108’ has the largest coverage for referral transport
in the state but the remote areas of LWE Districts have not
been fully covered due to lack of proper road connectivity
and difficulty in telephone network. This has been further
affected due to LWE activities in these areas.
AIM - To increase the proportion of institutional
deliveries, treatment facilities for sick neonates, children
and treatment facilities for most vulnerable populations
Problem Statement
Introduction
While the transport services may transport all pregnant
women, irrespective of the potential or actual complication,
the success of such a system should be measured by the
proportion of complications averted and lives saved.

This programme is being implemented through local
partnership with NGO for hiring of motor cycle ambulance
driver who has valid 2-wheeler driving license. A basic
First-aid training has been provided to the driver for
attending the patient while receiving and during travel. The
cases are being referred from the villages either to district
hospital or Primary Health Center.
