What is a Reference Source?
Any publication from which
authoritative information may
be obtained, including but not
limited to reference books,
catalog records, printed
indexes and abstracting
services, and bibliographic
databases.
Reitz, M. J. (2004). Dictionary For Library And Information Science: WestPort, CT:
Greenwood Publishing Group. (p.602).
What is a Reference Source? (Cont’d)
• A resource that is used most frequently by reference librarians.
The resource can be found in print, microforms, CD-ROM,
machine-readable, that are accessible through the library.
• Several types of reference books that are characterized by the
presentation of information, arrangement, indexing, and an
applicable amount of bibliographic content.
General Evaluation Criteria
Chase’s Calendar of Events 2014
• Format - The design of the Chase’s Calendar of Events 2014, allows the user to locate
information through the Table of Contents, Spotlight and Index. The Calendar of Information
provides informative information that is organized by listing the first month to the last month of
the year with detailed facts that are organized with important dates, ethnic and international
observances, sports events, historic anniversaries, important birth anniversaries, religious
holidays and observations, astronomical phenomena and much more.
• Scope - According to Chase's Calendar of Events it is the most comprehensive and
authoritative reference available on special events, holidays, federal and state observances,
historic anniversaries, birthdays and more. Each spring, thousands of new entries are
submitted to join the more than 12,000 items that make up each year's book. Each event listing
(where applicable) contains contact and mailing information.
• Relation to similar works - I compared this resource to the World Almanac 2014 and
discovered that there were similar facts listed in both reference items. Current dates in the
Chase’s has been updated online to represent correct information to the user.
• Purpose - The Chase’s Calendar of Events is a resource that contains 4,000 birthdays, 1,400 historical
anniversaries, 650 national and international holidays, 160 religious holidays and thousands of additional days
of note from all over the globe.
• Authority - since 2000 the resource has been handled by an in-house staff of editors and has partnered
with the publisher McGraw-Hill Education, which is considered to be reputable publisher who provides
customized educational content, software and services for pre-K through postgraduate education.
• Audience - The intended general audience for this resource would be librarians, broadcasters, journalist,
event planners, public relations professionals, and editors. This reference resource can also be used by the
lay person who may not be aware of calendar events. This item would be most useful to an adult.
• Edition - This is not the most current edition in print which includes a CD-ROM that is found in the back of this
resource. Each new edition appears in late September preceding the year in question.
