Cause
Cats pick up whipworm eggs in the environment when they drink
contaminated water or eat soil, food waste, or other contaminated material.
The eggs hatch inside your cat, and the larvae move to the large intestine
and burrow, where they begin maturing into adult worms.
Symptoms
While a mild whipworm infestation might be asymptomatic, symptoms will
develop without treatment. They include lethargy, diarrhea, weight loss,
dehydration, and—in the most severe cases—red blood in the stool and
anemia.
Treatment
Take your pet to the vet’s office as soon as you notice symptoms. Luckily, a
whipworm infestation is relatively easy to treat. Your cat will be given an
antiparasitic medication to kill off the worms, and they’ll probably receive
an anti-inflammatory as well. Cats that are dehydrated or anemic may need
extra care, though.
