New Date Set for 2014 Reunion
than 3pm for the day. We
hope that all of you can
make a day of the fun with
the family and be sure to
suggest things to do or
share that will make the
time with others very
meaningful and
worthwhile coming back
year after year.
Thanks again to all who
help with the set up each
and every year and with
the cleanup also. As the
older crew continue to do
their best each year with
these responsibilities, we
would love to be able to
share some of the pre and
post activities of the
reunion with any who may
want to help out. The
reunion is such a great
thing that must keep going
on to show our young
family members how
important family time can
be!
Thanks and we will see
you September!

Mary Shellnutt Turns 98 This Year!
Mary Cecil Cook was born 1917 in Harrelson,
GA. She lived there with her family until 1920
when they moved to Homestead, FL. She lived
in Homestead until 1932 when they moved
back to Georgia and settled in the Columbus
area. She was married to Paul McKinley
Shellnutt in 1933, they built a house and settled
in Cataula, GA, where she still lived today.
Paul Shellnutt is the son of Judge Shellnutt who
married Maggie Mae Moody, daughter of
Marcus Moody, son of James Moody, son of
Rueben Moody. She and Paul first attended the
family reunion in 1980 and have been in
attendance each year since that time.

Elizabeth Noel Ashby and
Paul Kenneth Strabbing
were united in marriage
on February 9, 2013 in the
Chicago Cultural Center in
Chicago, IL. Their
parents are Blair and
Scott Ashby of Sarasota,
Florida, and Carol
(Moody) and Ken
Strabbing of Holland,
Michigan. A reception
followed in Chez Moi in
Chicago. The couple
honeymooned in Tulum,

They say these mountains
are 250 million years old.
They’ll get no argument
from us. Only time could
have rounded their
contours, carpeted their
slopes with ancient
hardwoods and their
hidden trails with snowy
trillium blossoms, and sent
their blue peaks rolling
away into the distance like
a vast, eternal sea. In fact,
one translation of the
Cherokee word
Cataloochee Ranch
Mexico. The bride is a
self-employed surface
designer. The groom is
self-employed as a
photographer. They
reside in Chicago.
“Cataloochee” is “wave
upon wave.” And that’s a
translation that gets no
argument from us, either.
For more than 75 years,
the Great Smoky
Mountains have been our
home. And people like you
have been our guests,
often returning again and
again to establish their
own family vacation
traditions and help us
preserve the heritage of
this very special corner of
western North Carolina.
If you’re one of those old
friends, we look forward to
welcoming you back to
Maggie Valley this year. If
not, your welcome is
waiting. You may be a
first-time guest, but we
promise, you’ll never be a
stranger. We invite you to
come and discover for
yourself what makes a
vacation with us an
experience you’ll
remember for the rest of
your life.
3. Carol Lynn Slater, granddaughter of Calvin W. Moody, spent time last year living in
Beijing, China. She teaches English as a second language. Her students range from 3
years old to 60 years old. The Chinese government requires all foreigners to leave
China every six months and then report back to the police station after returning.
Happy, Happy, Happy!

Niner’s Celebrate 51 Years of Marriage!
Linda Moody and John Niner were married on December 29
th
, 1962 and
still enjoy each other’s company today in their new home in Seminole,
Florida! Congratulations to Linda and John on their ever faithful
commitment to each other. Be sure to congratulate them this year at the
reunion!
Making the Reunion Memorable
It’s no hidden rumor that
most who visit Maggie
Valley during this time of
year have the usual same
complaint; there’s nothing
to do but the reunion.
Let’s face it, once you visit
the few shops that are in
town, you eventually drive
elsewhere for things to do,
see, or eat. Most families
simply do not come back
to the reunion because of
the lack of extracurricular
activities outside of the
reunion. I was one of
these families for a long
time.
Actually there are many
things to do in the valley
area; however some of
them are not the cheapest
things to do. One of the
things that I am looking
forward to this year is the
planning of our family
“mini-vacation”. As you
know, the reunion also
takes place during the
school year, and I want
my son to get that perfect
attendance ribbon, but I
am letting him miss one
day this year to
experience the
Cataloochee Ranch. He
has not had the
opportunity to experience
living a few days at 5,000’
elevation while staying
active with horseback
riding, hiking, and wagon
rides.
I’m sure that you can find
something within 30-50
miles of Maggie Valley
that would be a great
family outing or fun thing
for singles to do also. Try
visiting some of the
websites for attractions in
the local area also as well
as the Chamber for
Maggie Valley also.
4. Be sure to continue to bring your auction items this year as this is a big help in
funding the family reunion! Don’t be picky either; we will sell anything you bring!
Top selling items are those that are hand crafted and represent our family or
heritage.
