The CBDT has introduced a paperless process for applying and obtaining PAN and TAN numbers online through the use of digital signatures or Aadhaar e-signatures. Applicants can now complete the online application process through the portals of NSDL eGov or UTIITSL and receive the PAN or TAN number within one day. This aims to ease the process of obtaining PAN and TAN numbers which previously took 10-15 days and will help curb the problem of duplicate PAN numbers by linking applications to Aadhaar identities.

PAN & TAN application process.
For fast tracking the allotment of PAN and
TAN to company applicants, Digital
Signature Certificate (DSC) based
application procedure has been introduced
on the portals of PAN service providers M/s
NSDL eGov and M/s UTIITSL. Under the
new process PAN and TAN will be allotted
within one day after completion of valid on-
line application.
Similarly, a new Aadhaar e-Signature
based application process for Individual
PAN applicants has been made available
on the portals of PAN service providers M/s
NSDL eGov. The URL links for the above
applications are available in ‘important
links’ on the homepage of the departmental
website www.incometaxindia.gov.in

hassle free PAN application process but
also seeding of Aadhaar in PAN which will
curb the problem of duplicate PAN to a
great extent.
What is PAN?
PAN stands for Permanent Account
Number. PAN is a ten-digit unique
alphanumeric number issued by the Indian
Income Tax Department to all tax payers
and act as unique identification number for
all tax payers in the country. Its format is
like ALWP-C-5809-L
What is TAN?
Tax Deduction Account Number or Tax
Collection Account Number is a 10-digit
alphanumeric number issued by the
Income-tax Department (we will refer to it
as TAN). TAN is to be obtained by all
persons who are responsible for deducting
withholding taxes (TDS) or who are
required to collect tax at source (TCS)

The Government of India in its continued
efforts to improve ease of doing business in
India has introuduced this welcome change
where in allotment of PAN & TAN can be
done in couple of days which usually takes
10-15 for issuance.
