Legal and Ethical Considerations
For a writer
Copyright
 Copyright
 Copyright is to prevent someone copying your work or
ideas without having permission, it also protects other
writers from misuse of their materials. This is where
things such as royalties come in, writers will be
required to pay rights for the original content, for
example HBO have to pay George RR.Martin lots of
money to be able to re write Game of Thrones into a
television compatible script
 Watersheds
 Watersheds is the time before which programs
unsuitable for children which would contain strong
language or inappropriate content should not be
broadcasted.
 Plagiarism
 Plagiarism would be a piece of writing which has been
taken from someone else/somewhere else and you are
claiming the work and ideas as your own.
Censorship
 Censorship is the prohibition of certain speech, which
people could see as harmful and sensitive, which is
decided by governments, media outlets and
authorities etc. Films and television programs are
submitted to the BBFC who either cut parts from the
script or increase the age rating in order to make it
available to only certain audiences. Some regions ban
or prohibit certain written content that they can deem
offensive or politically critical, this is usually a
common occurrence in countries like China.
Watershed
 Watersheds is the time after programs unsuitable for
children are available, this is because the later it gets
the less children there will be around to watch
potentially unsuitable content. It also allows writers to
target their audiences, programmes or films with an
adult theme will be aired after the watershed this is
because there will be more people of that certain
audience watching at that time.
Plagiarism
 Plagiarism would be a piece of writing which has been
taken from someone else/somewhere else and you are
claiming the work and ideas as your own. This
commonly occurs if someone were to not ask the
original writers for permission to use their content.
Becoming a Writer
Time Management
 Time management is important for a writer because they
are effectively self-employed, through their writing ability
they are going to make a living, if they miss publication
dates or certain deadlines they are not going to get paid.
Also if you struggle with your time management and
cannot meet deadlines it will effect if people want to work
with you again. As a writer you also need to apply your
time effectively in order to create new content for future
works.


Literary Agent
 Although it isn’t pivotal to a writer’s success some may
have an agent. The main reason for a writer to use an
agent is so they can go to publishers on the writer’s
behalf and represent their works in the hopes of
getting them published. From internet research it
seems clear that writers use literary agents to cut down
response times from publishers, it seems that in the
current market writers struggle to get their works
looked at by serious and well known publishers
without professional representation.
Royalty payments
 Royalty payments are payments made in order to
obtain the on-going use of an asset. An example of a
royalty payment would be the publisher paying a
writer a set amount of royalty money, this then allows
the publisher to continue selling the writers
intellectual properties.
Professional script format
 Professional scripts are all presented in the same
format, scripts are meant to be no more than 118 pages
in length, and margins for the script should be 1” and
all in black. The text should also be in size 12 and
written in the courier font, your script probably won’t
be looked at by a professional publisher.
