2. Early Life
-Born March 25, 1881 in
Nagyszentmiklos,
Hungary
-Learned piano from his mother at a
young age
-Began formal studies at the Royal
Academy of Music in Budapest
-Met and befriended Zoltan Kodaly
3. Travels
-In 1908, traveled to rural
areas of Hungary to study
Magyar folk music with
Kodaly
-Recorded Magyar music and
included elements of it in his
compositions
-Later went toTurkey, North
Africa and all over Europe to
study folk music
4. Late Life
-Bartok expressed anti-fascist views in the
years beforeWWII, and was forced to
leave Hungary
-Moved to NewYork, where he struggled
financially and professionally
-In 1942, he was diagnosed with terminal leukemia
-Wrote several well-known works after the diagnosis, including Piano
-Died on September 26, 1945
