Filmjolk
What does filmjolk taste like?
- has a mild cheese-like flavor
- thickness similar to kefir; thinner than regular yogurt
- sweet and less sour than yogurt in general
Filmjolk history:
Filmjolk is a Nordic dairy product that has been around since
the 9th century (viking age)!
Nordic countries: Sweden, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Denmark,
Greenland, and some Northern European island chains.
Filmjolk (and all yogurt) is soured (or “fermented”) milk,
originally made to extend milk’s shelf life.
Filmjolk is similar to yogurt but it is fermented at a lower
temperature, giving it a different taste.
how is filmjolk made?
1. make the “starter”
- add a packet of filmjolk culture to 1-2
cups pasteurized milk
- let it sit at warm room temperature (~70
degrees) for 12-48 hours, until it has a
thick texture
1. add 1 tbsp of starter per 1 cup of
pasteurized milk (stir well)
