1. History of women in magazines
In 1693 the first issue of the first women's magazine in Britain, The Ladies'
Mercury, was published.
It was in mid-nineteenth century Britain that women’s magazine readership
first expanded from the elite to the middle classes. Although today’s
reader would recognise the columns on fashion and ‘Agony Aunt’ sections
that explored risqué subjects like sex and relationships.
Similarly, in India, the black and white Grihasthya (The Household) and
Grihini (The Housewife) appealed to the domestic sensibilities of women.
2. This magazine implies that
women should eat less than
men by using the phrase
“man-sized meal” Suggesting
that men eat bigger meals.
Sexism was a major part of
early women’s magazines.
3. This article suggests that a woman’s main
purpose is to please her husband. “Every
husband wants his wife to be feminine…” This
says a lot because even in an advert for
women’s magazines the biggest word is
“Husband”
