Meridian Community College Recognized with Top Honors
at PBL National Leadership Conference in Chicago
(Meridian, MS) (July 1, 2015)—More than 1,600 of America’s best and brightest college students traveled to the Windy
City to Step Up to the Challenge as they showcased their talents as future business leaders and vied for the opportunity to
win more than $81,000 in cash awards.
Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda
(FBLA-PBL), held its PBL National Leadership
Conference in Chicago on June24–27. Participants
from across the United States attended this exciting
conference to enhance their business skills, expand
their networks, and participate in more than 55
business and business-related competitive events.
Two teams from Meridian CommunityCollege’s
Information Systems Technology program received
national recognition at the PBL Awards of Excellence Program on June27. One team of students, Ryan Sanders,
Debbie Bivens, and Nathan Gibson competed in Network Design and brought home 6th place. Network Design
focuses on the fundamentals of enterprise level networks: configuring routers and managing switches. The ability to
evaluate the needs of an organization and then design and implement network solutions is a valuable skill in today’s
connected workplace.
A second team of students, (Jeffery Young, Shawna Jenkins, and Nathan Gibson), competed in Emerging Business
Issues and brought home8th place. Emerging Business Issues provides FBLA members with an opportunityto develop
and demonstrate skills in researching and presenting an emerging business issue. In addition to learning research skills,
team participants develop speaking ability and poise through oral presentation.
“We are so proud of these students,” said Terry Cullum, Phi Beta Lambda- Information Systems Technology, Lead
Advisor. “They have worked extremely hard and competed against somepretty stiff opponents to earn their place
among the nation’s best in information systems programs.

The award was part of a comprehensive national competitive events program sponsored by FBLA-PBL that recognizes
and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas. For many students, the competitive events
are the capstone activity of their academic careers. In addition to the competitions, students immersed themselves in
educational workshops, visited an information-packed exhibit hall, and attended motivational keynotes on a broad range
of business topics.
