2. HOW THE NATURE OF WORK IS CHANGING IN
UGANDA: FOCUS ON THE FINANCIAL SERVICES
SECTOR.
Driven by advances in technology, the Financial services
sector if fast accumulating volumes of data, coupled with the
increasing skilling of the youth who make up over 70% of the
population in form of University graduates amidst low levels of
job creation; Financial Institutions are coming up with efficient
and effective ways to scale business, reduce cost and better
risk management practices / processes. Specific are these
key trends shaping the nature of work;
The mighty power of Fintechs: Directly changing the
way work is being done and the nature of skills that are
required to do the jobs. Banks have responded by
partnering with them and these are changing the skill
sets required Vs the available skills creating an
employment gap.

3. HOW THE NATURE OF WORK IS CHANGING IN
UGANDA: FOCUS ON THE FINANCIAL SERVICES
SECTOR.
The Digital Transformations; Increasingly we are seeing
trends of digital transformations driven by the increasing
mobility of customers. As a result, we see work that
needed business studies’ orientation being replaced by
hard core skill orientation such as Computer science and
science in technology because it is easier to transfer
business knowledge to hard coded scientists than the
reverse;
With technology; the level of unemployment is expected
to rise. Organizations prefer to work smart and efficient
through digital. There are more Arts oriented graduates
than Science oriented graduates.
Uganda is not isolated from the increasing need for Data
scientists and Data engineers to support the algorithm
driven way of business operations.THE FUTURE OF WORK ; SEPT 20193

1. Increase commitment into Incubation centers targeting
fresh graduates with innovative ideas for preparation
into the increasingly challenging labor market.
2. The academic curriculum at all levels should be
reviewed to drive knowledge for the future with a
practical perspective.
3. Government should start investment in pre primary
education as it is clear early adoption of future skills;
i.e. cognitive, socio behavior and Mathematics is more
effective at a younger age.
4. Government through the Ministry of Education should
harness the quality of elementary education teachers.
These need tighter regulation through licensing /
certification with continued up skilling.
