2. Having found a good source of nectar the scout fills her honey sac and
returns to the hive. On arrival, she alerts other bees and recruits them
to forage the source she has discovered. She does this by means of
the bee ‘dance’ so well described by the Karl von Frisch. She cannot
convey the visual appearance of the floral source she has found but
she can, and does, pass on information as to its scent, direction, and
distance. She dance on the vertical face of a comb, or more rarely, on
the alighting board, and her excitement attracts the attention of other
worker who follow her movement.
As the dancing bee travels up or more down straight part, she waggles
her abdomen from side to side. The tempo of the dance indicates the
distance of the source from the hive.
