1960 Morris Mini Minor De-Luxe Saloon

Built on 5 October 1960 and despatched from the factory nine days later, 71 COX is a genuine right-hand drive,
home market, Morris Mini Minor De-Luxe saloon.
First registered on 2 February 1961 through dealers Smiths Garages Limited, Bournville, the car came into its
present family ownership in January 1974 after the Standard 8 it replaced ‘failed to proceed’. Cherry Red with
grey fleck and red trim, 71 COX provided reliable service until 2000 (a small mishap at Kenilworth Golf Club in
1979 aside…), when the annual MoT test delivered bad news. With the choices being to either scrap or restore,
thankfully the decision to restore was made.
A note in the Mini’s file suggests that the work took five years to complete, with it being restored to original
specification where possible and remaining in Cherry Red with the original specification interior. The original
rear seat was kept, although it is likely that the fronts were re-trimmed during the restoration, albeit in correct
colours. Fifteen years later the car remains generally very tidy and still presentable, although starting to ‘mellow’
in some areas. More recently it has stood for some time, so inspection prior to purchase is expected and some
re-commissioning will be required.
Paperwork includes the original Warranty dated February 1961 and BMIHT ‘Heritage Certificate’, the original buff
log book dated February 2nd 1961, handbook, a large quantity of expired MoT test certificates, various expired V5
registration documents and V5C. The original Smiths Garage Ltd., Bournville rear registration plate has been kept
with the car and, as a bonus, a nodding dog guards the rear shelf.

Trevor Coldrey, and his late wife Monica, ran the Harlequin
Gallery in South East London. Since its inception, Trevor
has been a keen supporter of the arts, its craftsmen and
craftswomen, and has built an unrivalled collection of
contemporary ceramics.
Having passed on the business in 1999, he has continued
to support new craftspeople and has donated items from
his collection to national institutions.
Energetic and always animated, with personal stories
about many of the potters and objects we are offering,
he has decided to sell on some of his collection to a new
generation of collectors.

The design shows the concept for a Ford V8 powered
Gyronaut X-2, planned to break the 400mph motorcycle
land speed record, the engine delivered to Tremulis by
Carroll Shelby. Its predecessor was the X-1, which was
powered by two Triumph 650cc engines and was the
world’s fastest motorcycle from 1966-1970, with a top
speed of 245.667mph.

Trevor Fiore was born Trevor Frost in the UK in 1937 to an
Italian mother. After his initial apprenticeship with Standard
Triumph whilst taking art courses in Birmingham, he joined
the Standard Design Studio in 1956.
After working with them for six years, he left the UK to
work with Raymond Loewy in Paris. In 1964 he joined
Fissore, a small body styling studio in Milan where he
changed his name to his mother’s family name. Here he
worked for a diverse range of mainly smaller manufacturers
and is particularly well known for his TVR designs. But
as seen from these images, he also produced studies for
Jaguar Daimler and Austin Healey.
In 1980 he joined Citroen where he worked on the Karim
and Xenia project cars. In 1990 he left Citroen and, apart
from a few small studies, has not worked in the automobile
industry. 71

Barbara Jones (1912-1978) studied
mural decoration at the Royal College
of Art and was part of the circle of
artists associated with Eric Ravilious
and Edward Bawden. Various shipping
companies, including P&O, hotels and
restaurants commissioned her designs,
and she worked on many important
exhibitions. James Gardner requested
her involvement over several decades,
with ‘Design Fair’ for the Council of
Industrial Design in the late 1940s,
the Festival of Britain in 1951, and the
Commonwealth Institute, London in
1962. Graphic designer, writer and
broadcaster, Jones championed the
popular arts. Her exhibition ‘Black Eyes
and Lemonade’ for the Whitechapel
Art Gallery in 1951, and her book, ‘The
Unsophisticated Arts’, of the same year,
remain landmarks in the appreciation
of vernacular English culture. 72

Peter Collingwood (1922-2008) was at the forefront of weaving
for fifty years. His wall hangings use the traditional craft to create
visual abstraction and are admired worldwide. Trained after
national service by the master weaver Ethel Mairet, he worked
with Alastair Morton, who became the visionary Artistic Director
at the Edinburgh Weavers.
In 1952, he set up a studio at Archway in North London and
sold his work in Liberty’s and Heal’s. He also exhibited at the
Red Rose Guild and the Arts and Crafts Society. He moved to
Digswell Arts Trust in Hertfordshire, where he met and exhibited
with Hans Coper.
Collingwood moved to Nayland near Colchester in 1964, where
he worked until his death in 2008.

Bill Culbert was one of a handful of
artists in the mid-sixties exploring
kinetic and optical art forms. Cubic
Projections is a light sculpture that
sees the performation of a black
globe allowing spots of light to
be projected and a regulated flow
of light at intervals to be seen,
depicting the image of the bulb
filament on to the surrounding
surfaces. This sculpture was one
of a limited edition of multiples
produced and sold by the Lisson
Gallery in 1968.

Interspace
Kurt Heide was a German émigré who set up Oscar Woollens, the leading
modern design store in North London in the 1960s.
After the war, he and his business partner, Walter Collins, having both
been trained as cabinetmakers, were involved in the furniture trade and
built up a client base in the Hampstead area. In the early 1950s, they
were involved with interior schemes at the Festival of Britain and in shops
in central London. The Oscar Woollens name came about when they
acquired their first shop from a wool merchant called Oscar who had
registered the name for his company, but had no use for it. With their skills
and entrepreneurship, thus began over a decade of changing British post-
war furniture tastes.
Persuading people to buy their well-designed furniture and a very personal
service led to the expansion of their business to a furniture hire arm that
supplied sets to films, including‘Sunday, Bloody Sunday’and‘There’s a Girl
in My Soup’, to high profile clients such as John le Carré.
In 1968, Kurt married Nanna Ditzel, the Danish furniture and jewellery
designer. Although somewhat known as Nanna’s husband, he was never
in her shadow, and they collaborated together in setting up ‘Interspace’, a
furniture company that designed modern furniture for British and Danish
companies.
The furniture and photograph lots for sale in this auction were in the
collection of Kurt Heide’s family, whose daughter, and subsequently
granddaughter, lived in his flat in North London after his death in 1985.
Photographs of the interior of the flat appeared in the Ideal Home
Magazine in 1962, with furnishings being installed by France and Sons.
The large cabinet (lot 340) was a bespoke piece fitted for the flat, which
was only removed this spring.
The photographic archive will, I’m sure, be of huge interest to interior
designers and furniture historians of the future, looking back at over sixty
years of inspiring interiors.

For the nearly thirty years between 1947 and 1971,
that Ingeborg Lundin designed glassware for Sweden’s
Orrefors glassworks, her designs were prized for their
originality, simplicity and grace. Founded in 1898,
Orrefors originally manufactured bottles, window
glass, and tableware. In 1914, the firm started
to produce cut crystal, and by 1925 had
become internationally renowned for
its engraved art glass. By the late
1940s, the young Lundin and her
contemporaries at Orrefors and
other Scandinavian glassworks
were developing new forms
that expressed the spirit of
a softer, organic type of
modernism.
In 1955, Lundin designed
the Apple (Äpplet) vase
for the Helsingborg
1955 Exhibition, a
world’s fair dedicated
to modern design. The
simple transparent
form of her Apple vase
is a beautiful luminous
shape that needs no
ornamentation. The
slightly imperfect sphere,
topped by a thick-walled
cylindrical neck reminiscent
of an apple’s stem, relies on
the play of light on and in
the colourless glass itself. The
form exploits the transparency
of glass exceptionally well. When
shown at the Milan Triennale of
1957, the Apple vase won a gold
medal. Produced in both clear and
light green transparent glass, it is the best
known of Lundin’s designs for Orrefors.
