California Gold Region One
CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 1
California Gold Region 1 embraces the eastern area of Southern California
from Death Valley to the Mexican Border. It includes Death Valley, Needles,
Blythe, Glamis, Picacho and Brawley. Some of the mountain ranges in
California Gold Region 1 are Nopah, Big Maria, Cargo Muchacho, Chocolate,
Chuckwalla, Panamint, Providence, Funeral, Inyo and Whipple.
There are gold sites in California Gold Region 1 within fifty miles of Las
Vegas along Interstate 15. Sites occur west of Needles near Interstate 40, west
of Blythe near Interstate 10 and along the California side of the Colorado
River north of Interstate 8 just a few miles north of Yuma, Arizona.
Big Ten's California Gold Map 1 covers California Gold Region 1. It shows
405 gold mines and prospecting sites from official geological records of the
State of California and the federal government. Specific gold deposit sites are
shown in the eastern part of these counties:
Imperial Inyo Riverside San Bernardino
Gold sites continue to the west on Maps 2, 3 and 4.
GOLD MINES AND GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 1
California Division of Mines and Geology Bulletin 193 mentions that mining
was done by Spaniards as early as 1780-81 in the Cargo Muchacho Gold
District, about 15 miles northwest of Yuma, Arizona. Later, mining was
resumed under Mexican rule. This is believed to be the first gold mined in
what is now the State of California.
The Cargo Muchacho District received it's name of Cargo Muchacho, or
Loaded Boy, when two young Mexican boys came into camp one evening
with their shirts loaded with gold. American miners became interested in this
district after the end of the Mexican War in 1848. Large scale mining was
done there to depths of 1,000 feet.
The Potholes and Picacho mining districts also lie in the southeastern part of
Imperial County, about 50 miles east of El Centro and 20 miles north of
Yuma. Small scale mining began in the Potholes District when California was
2
Haytham Al Fiqi Books: http://amzn.to/27nSCB9
under Spanish rule. The district was named Potholes because the gold was
found in small depressions or pots. As many as 500 Mexicans and Indians
could be seen working the dry washes. It is probable that the Spanish mined
the Picacho District as early as 1780. Gold has also been mined in the
Chocolate Mountains in Imperial County, notably northeast of Glamis.
The Chuckwalla district, in the Chuckwalla Mountains of Southeastern
Riverside County , was organized in the 1880's and mining continued through
the early 1900's. There is a considerable number of mines in this area.
Gold has been mined in the Clark Mountain Range in San Bernardino County
since the early 1880's, and since at least 1882 in the Ivanpah District, both of
which are just off of Interstate 15 and about 35 miles northeast of Baker.
Many gold deposits have been discovered through the years both east and
west of Death Valley National Monument in Inyo County.
COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 1
The eastern area of Southern California is dry and hot. This has not deterred
modern-day prospectors from hunting for gold with metal detectors during the
cooler seasons. They use their metal detectors to scan placers for nuggets in
the dry washes and the tailings from earlier mining operations. Other
prospectors employ dry washers to recover fine gold and nuggets.
The hundreds of dry washes originating in, and coming down from, the
mountain ranges offer opportunities to find more gold. Prospectors from
Arizona, Nevada, and other states cross into California to prospect in
California Gold Region 1.
California Gold Region Two
CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 2
California Gold Region 2 includes the southernmost part of Southern
California from the Mexican Border northward to Santa Ana and Riverside
and eastward to El Centro, the Salton Sea and Joshua Tree National
Monument. It embraces San Diego, Escondido, Anaheim, Hemet, Julian, Palm
Springs and Indio. Some of the mountain ranges in the region are Laguna,
San Ysidro, Santa Ana, Elsinore, Little San Bernardino and San Jacinto.

The national forests in California Gold Region 2 are Cleveland and San
Bernardino. There are gold sites throughout the region and near San Diego,
Escondido, Riverside, Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Monument.
Big Ten's California Gold Map 2 covers California Gold Region 2. It shows
340 gold mines and prospecting sites from official geological records of the
State of California and the federal government. Specific gold deposit sites are
shown in parts of these counties:

Gold sites continue to the east on Map 1 and to the north on Map 3.
GOLD MINES AND GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 2
Many people are surprised to learn of the vast extent of gold mining and
prospecting sites in Southern California. This is due in part to the massive
amount of publicity directed toward history of the discovery of gold in the
Mother Lode area of the state and the resulting California Gold Rush.
However, the early prospectors found gold in Southern California, including
in California Gold Region 2.
The San Ysidro Mountains a few miles east of Chula Vista and 20 miles
southeast of San Diego is the location of the Dulzura Gold District. Placer
gold was discovered here in 1828 and lode mining began in 1890. The
deposits consist of broken and crushed quartz containing gold.
The Escondido District is 25 miles north of San Diego. Mexicans mined the
rich surface ores here many years ago and there was considerable activity in
this district in the 1890's and early 1900's.
The Laguna District lies about 45 miles east-northeast of San Diego in the
Laguna Mountains. The Cuyamaca District is a few miles northwest of the
Laguna District. The Pine Valley District in San Diego County includes
Descanso and is just off of Interstate 8 about 35 miles east of San Diego.
Directly east of Escondido is the famous Julian-Banner District, which,
together with the Cuyamaca and Pinacote Districts, were prime sources of
gold in Region 2. The Pinacote District is in the hills of western Riverside
County between Perris and Lake Elsinore. The area of the Pinacote District
was placer mined in the 1850's and there was considerable activity after
discovery of a major vein in 1874, and until 1903.
Some other Region 2 gold districts were: Boulder Creek, about 5 miles west
of Cuyamaca; Deer Park, about 6 miles south of Cuyamaca Rancho State

Park; Menifee, about 8 miles south of Perris; Mesa Grande, about 50 miles
north of San Diego and just northwest of the town of Mesa Grande;
Montezuma, or Rice District, about 12 miles north of Julian; and, Trabuco, in
the canyons of the Santa Ana Mountains in eastern Orange County, mainly the
Trabuco and Silverado Canyons.
The rich Dale or Virginia Dale District is in southern San Bernardino County
and northern Riverside County. It extends into California Gold Region 2 about
50 miles east-northeast of Palm Springs. There are many gold deposit sites
between Palm Springs and the Dale District.
COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 2
California Gold Region 2 is a good part of the state for outdoor recreation,
including recreational gold prospecting and gold panning. It has the Cleveland
National Forest and the San Bernardino National Forest.
Gold sites are within easy driving distance of the areas of major population
and the clear, mild weather is ideal for outdoor activities. Camping and RV
facilities are excellent.
California Gold Region Three
RECREATIONAL GOLD PROSPECTING AND GOLD PANNING IN
THE CALIFORNIA GOLD REGIONS
Note: The immediately following eight paragraphs are common to each of the
six (6) California gold regions. If you should read about gold in the other
California gold regions, just scroll down to the point in the text where the
particular region is discussed and continue on from there.
Since the days of the California gold rush in 1849, prospectors, treasure
hunters and vacationers have flocked to California to hunt for gold. They use
gold pans, sluice boxes, metal detectors, dredges and dry washers in their
prospecting efforts. Rockhounding is done in the gold producing areas.
Recreational gold panning is a popular hobby in California. A simple gold pan
is effective in detecting and recovering gold from a streambed.
Metal detectors are used to detect nuggets in the dry washes, dry streambeds
and desert areas. Inexpensive light weight sluice boxes are often used in
flowing streams to increase the amount of material being washed for gold.
Dry washers are used to recover gold in arid areas. Experienced prospectors
may be seen dredging for California gold. However, if you want to find some

gold and have fun doing it, pans will suffice and provide many happy hours of
outdoor activity for you and your family.
The great California Gold Rush was of such importance, and has received so
much publicity, that many people are not aware that the California Gold Rush
was preceded by gold rushes in the Southeastern States. The first documented
discovery of gold in the United States was in North Carolina in 1799 and gold
mining started there in 1803. A major gold rush took place in Georgia in 1828
and a lesser rush occurred in Alabama in the 1830's. Most of the gold mining
districts in the West were located by pioneers, many of whom were
experienced gold miners from Alabama and Georgia.
Gold mining and prospecting sites in California range from the Mexican
border to the Oregon state line and eastward to the Arizona and Nevada state
lines. Both Northern and Southern California provide ample locations where
you may pan for gold.
Knowledge of those places where gold has been found earlier is useful in
searching for more gold.
Prior work by geologists of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the U.S. Geological
Survey and the California Division of Mines and Geology is acknowledged.
Of special mention is the prior work of William B. Clark and Ralph Loyd of
the California Division of Mines and Geology and that of Waldemar P.
Lindgren of the U.S. Geological Survey. The excellent California Division of
Mines and Geology Bulletin 193, by William B. Clark, was drawn upon for
details of specific gold districts throughout the state and for text regarding the
Klamath Mountains region of Northern California. Lindgren's work published
in the year 1911 as regards the ancient Tertiary Rivers is considered a classic.
Note: The above paragraphs to this point are common to each of the six (6)
California gold regions. If you should read about gold in the other California
gold regions, just scroll down to the point in the text where the particular
region is discussed and continue on from there.

GOLD MINES AND GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 3
Five hundred thirteen gold mines and prospects are spread throughout
California Gold Region 3. There are heavy localized concentrations of gold
sites as well as isolated deposits.
Ninety six (96) gold deposit sites are within 30 miles of Pasadena. There are
one hundred twenty five (125) sites within 40 miles of Big Bear Lake in San
Bernardino County and fifty (50) sites in the area neighboring Frazier
Mountain in Ventura County.
Placer gold was mined in the San Gabriel Mountains as early as 1834 in the
Acton District about 20 miles north of Los Angeles. Lode mining began there
about 1880 and a number of mines in the district were active in the 1900's.
The Piru District is in northeastern Ventura County near Piru Creek and just
south of the Frazier Mountain District. Gold from placer mining in the Piru
District was shipped to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia in 1842.
The Saugus District, also known as the Newhall District and the San Gabriel
District, includes a number of canyons and the Santa Clara River in the
vicinity of the city of Newhall in Los Angeles County. Placer mining has been
carried on here with gold being recovered from gravels in stream channels and
from benches and terraces along the banks.
Placer gold has been recovered in some of the canyons and washes along the
south flank of the San Gabriel Mountains north and east of Los Angeles. Two
7

of the most important sources have been the San Gabriel Canyon, near Azusa,
and the Tujunga Canyon to the west.
Some other concentrations of gold deposits occur to the east of George Air
Force Base and around the city of Barstow. There is a group of 25 gold mines
and prospects near the San Bernardino County/Riverside County line 10 miles
south of Twentynine Palms. Another 15 to 20 miles to the east, and bridging
the foregoing county lines, is the prolific Dale Mining District.
Many gold sites in east-central San Bernardino County are west of the Ward
Valley on both sides of Interstate 40, and on both sides of the Fenner Valley.
This area has hundreds of dry washes.
COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 3
The varied topography of this area enhances the recreational prospecting
experience. California Gold Region 3 has many physical variations, such as
mountains, canyons, valleys, streams, dry washes and a desert.
Novice and experienced prospectors with gold pans or metal detectors enjoy
panning and detecting in the Angeles National Forest north of the greater Los
Angeles area and in the San Bernardino National Forest northeast of San
Bernardino.
Metal detectors and dry washers are used in the arid parts of California Gold .
CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 4
California Gold Region 4 embraces Fresno, Bakersfield, Visalia, Porterville,
Mohave, Randsburg, Johannesburg, Ridgecrest, China Lake, Trona, Fort
Irwin, Independence, Lone Pine and Darwin.
National Forests in California Gold Region 4 include Sequoia, Sierra and
Inyo. Some of the mountain ranges there are: Sierra Nevada, Tehachapi,
Greenhorn, Panamint, El Paso, Piute, Granite, Argus, Slate and Owls Head.
Other features of interest are: Sequoia National Park Giant Forest (the really
big trees), Kings Canyon National Park, Mohave Desert, Owens Valley,
Panamint Valley, Indian reservations and the U. S. Naval Weapons Center.
There are one hundred seventy (170) gold sites within 40 miles of Bakersfield
and fifty (50) sites within 40 miles of Fresno. Gold deposits extend across
California Gold Region 4 to Death Valley National Monument.
Big Ten's California Gold Map 4 covers California Gold Region 4. It shows

Gold sites continue to the east on California Gold Map 1, to the south on Map
3 and to the north on Map 5.
GOLD MINES AND GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 4
California Gold Region 4 in Southern California is host to important gold
deposits; a few of which follow:
There is a concentration of gold sites five miles south of Mohave and another
west of Fort Irwin, about 20 miles from Barstow. Heavy concentrations occur
along the Kern River and at Isabella Lake east of the Greenhorn Mountains.
California state road 178 parallels the Kern River. More sites exist in Sequoia
National Forest east of Bakersfield.
The numerous gold deposits in the area surrounding Randsburg and
Johannesburg and in the El Paso mountains northwest of Randsburg have
been of considerable interest to prospectors and miners since the 1880's. Dry
placer gold has been found in Red Rock Canyon, Mesquite Canyon, Goler
Gulch and Red Bluffs. Gold-bearing sands and gravel occur in benches and in
the hillsides above the canyons and on bedrock in the washes and canyons
themselves. The gold particles are round and appear to have suffered
considerable abrasion. The gold is mostly fine, although nuggets up to several
ounces have been found. There are some narrow gold-quartz veins present.
The Rademacher Gold District is about 15 miles north of Randsburg and
about 5 miles south of Ridgecrest. Faults and quartz veins exist in this district,
which has 25 gold mines.
Many gold sites are in and between the Argus Mountain Range west of Trona
and the Slate Mountain Range east of Trona. This area bridges the Inyo
County/ San Bernardino County line east of the U.S. Naval Weapons Center.
There are trails leading to the gold mines and dry washes here.
North and northeast of Fresno, gold sites are located in California Gold
Region 4 near the Millerton Lake State Recreation Area and Pine Flat Lake.
There are sites in Sierra National Forest and Sequoia National Forest north
and south of the Kings River in Fresno County.
Inyo County has many gold deposits in and around the Owens Valley, north of
Lone Pine, and in the vicinity of Darwin, south of state highway 190.

COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 4
In this region you will be prospecting for California gold in an interesting part
of the United States, which boasts the giant redwood trees. Time permitting,
you may wish to drive through the beautiful twisting mountain road leading
down into Kings Canyon and the Kings River in Kings Canyon National Park.
The many existing gold sites in California Gold Region 4 testify to the great
interest in prospecting here in the past. Use a gold pan in the streams and a
metal detector or dry washer in arid locations.
CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 5
California Gold Region 5 is in Northern California and extends from
Millerton Lake State Recreation Area, in Fresno County, about 40 miles south
of Yosemite National Park, northward to about five miles north of Quincy, in
Plumas County. It extends eastward from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe and the
Nevada state line. Gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848, which led to
the California Gold Rush in 1849.
California Gold Region 5 embraces Yosemite National Park, Mono Lake,
Sacramento, Carmichael, Columbia, Auburn, Placerville, Nevada City, Grass
Valley, Angels Camp, Yuba City, Marysville, Oroville, Paradise, Magalia,
Downieville, Mariposa, Coarse Gold, Coloma and Jamestown.
Because of the proliferation of gold deposits here, California Gold Region 5 is
known as the California Mother Lode. There is no fixed definition of the
boundaries of the "Mother Lode", and actually no true "mother lode" exists.
Some geologists define the boundaries as extending further southeast into
California Gold Region 4 and further northwest into region 6. In any case, this
is a very gold-rich area that has drawn worldwide attention and stimulated
migration to California. Pioneers flocked westward across the U. S. plains in
covered wagons and people came from Germany, China and other countries to
seek gold in California.
California's largest true gold nugget weighed 54 pounds troy. It was found in
California Gold Region 5 at Magalia, in Butte County.
Big Ten's California Gold Map 5 covers California Gold Region 5. It shows
3,000 gold mines and prospecting sites from official geological records of the
State of California and the federal government. Specific gold deposit sites are
shown in parts of these counties:

GOLD MINES AND GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 5
There are scattered deposits throughout California Gold Region 5 and there
are heavy concentrations of gold sites in famous mining areas, such as Grass
Valley, Auburn, Placerville, Downieville, Mariposa, Angels Camp and all
along California state road 49, which connected the gold camps.
Recreational panning and sluicing is done in the hundreds of streams that lace
the region. Hard rock lode mining is done by established mining companies.
Much hydraulic mining was done in the past.
Some of the gold-bearing rivers are: Yuba, Feather, American, Calaveras,
Merced, Cosumnes, Tuolumne and Stanislaus. Tributaries to these rivers have
also produced gold.
COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 5
Gold panning may be done in the eight national forests that cover much of the
region: El Dorado, Tahoe, Plumas, Lassen, Sierra, Stanislaus, Inyo and
Toiyabe. There are many beautiful streams in the national forests where gold
may be found.
The dry remains of the ancient rivers of the Tertiary Period are shown on
California Gold Map 5. The ancient rivers are discontinuous today, with some
parts of them being in the sides of mountains and other parts buried under lava
flows from the volcanoes that erupted in the past. These ancient rivers were a
major source of gold in the present-day rivers. According to Lindgren, some
gravel deposits in the Tertiary rivers were 250 feet deep, with gold occurring
at various levels within the gravels. Remains of the ancient rivers are actively
prospected and mined.
Many people have long harbored a desire to find gold in the California Mother
Lode region. With the advent of motorhomes, travel trailers and other
recreational vehicles, many prospectors are fulfilling that dream.

If you venture to California Gold Region 5, be sure to tour California State
Highway 49, which connects the gold camps and was named after the 49'ers.
Interesting gold mining artifacts are displayed at localities along this route.

GOLD MINES AND GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 6
There are many gold districts in this region. The information quoted below is
from California Division of Mines and Geology Bulletin 193 by William B.
Clark.
"The Klamath Mountains region in northwestern California is the second-most
gold-productive province in California. The principal gold districts are in
Shasta, Siskiyou, and Trinity Counties. Although there are several important
lode-gold districts, the placer deposits have been the largest sources of gold.
The most productive placer deposits in the Klamath Mountains have been
those associated with the Klamath and Trinity Rivers and their tributaries.
Gold is found not only in the gravels in the present stream channels, but also
in older terrace and bench deposits adjacent to the channels. The terrace and
bench deposits often were mined by hydraulicing.
Rising in southern Oregon, the Klamath River flows west across the Klamath
Mountains and empties into the Pacific Ocean. The most important tributary
streams of the Klamath River are the Shasta, Scott, and Salmon Rivers, and
Cottonwood, Horse, Seiad, Thompson, Indian, Clear, Dillon, and Camp
Creeks. Important centers of placer mining in the Klamath River system have
been at Hornbrook, Yreka, Scott Bar, Hamburg, Somesbar, Orleans, Sawyers,
Forks of Salmon, Callahan, and Cecilville.
The Trinity River, which flows into the Klamath River at Weitchpec, drains
the southern portion of the Klamath Mountains. The most productive placer
deposits of the Trinity River are those located along its main channel. These
include the deposits at Carrville, Trinity Center, Minersville, Lewiston,
Weaverville, Junction City, and Salyer. The principal tributaries of the Trinity
River are Coffee Creek, Stewart's Fork, East Fork, New River, Indian Creek
and Hayfork Creek. The La Grange mine, a few miles west of Weaverville,
was one of the largest hydraulic mines in California. Other sources of placer
gold in the Klamath Mountains have been the Smith River region in Del Norte
County and the upper Sacramento River and its tributaries, which include
Backbone, Clear, Cottonwood, and Beegum Creeks.
Lode-gold deposits are found throughout the Klamath Mountains. The most
productive district has been the French Gulch-Deadwood district of Shasta
14
Haytham Al Fiqi Books: http://amzn.to/27nSCB9
and Trinity Counties in the southern portion of the province. Other important
sources of lode gold have been the Deadwood district of Siskiyou County
(there are several Deadwood districts in California). Dillon Creek, Callahan,
Oro Fino, Liberty, Sawyers Bar, Harrison Gulch, Whiskeytown, and Buckeye-
Old Diggings districts. Considerable amounts of gold have been produced in
the Shasta copper-zinc belt and lesser amounts in other copper deposits, such
as the Copper Bluff mine at Hoopa.
The gold nearly always occurs in native form in quartz veins, usually
associated with pyrite and smaller amounts of other sulfides. The veins occur
in all metamorphic rocks of Jurassic and older ages. A few lode-gold deposits
are found in granitic rocks."
COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD
REGION 6
The rugged and beautiful countryside of this region of Northern California has
always attracted tourists, adventurers and gold prospectors. There are literally
hundreds of places where a person may find gold with a pan.
The California gold sites start 50 miles south of Grants Pass, Oregon and 29
miles south of Medford, Oregon. Some of the gold sites southeast of
Susanville are only 65 miles from Reno, Nevada.
California Gold Region 6 has a number of National Forests where panning is
done, including: Shasta, Plumas, Trinity, Six Rivers, Siskiyou, Modoc and
Klamath.
Large numbers of gold sites occur southwest of Susanville in Plumas County,
Lassen County, and Butte County, many of them being in Plumas National
Forest. The gold-rich North Fork and East Branch of the North Fork of the
Feather River are in this area, as well as Rush Creek and other gold creeks.
East of Crescent City there are gold sites at the Smith River. North and south
of Crescent City there are a number of beach gold deposits. A string of beach
sites known as Gold Bluff is south of where the Klamath River enters the
Pacific Ocean.

  • 1. Haytham Al Fiqi Books: http://amzn.to/27nSCB9 California Gold Mines, Gold Prospecting, Gold Panning and Treasure Hunting in California Gold Region 6 1
  • 2. Haytham Al Fiqi Books: http://amzn.to/27nSCB9 California gold in: California Gold Region One CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 1 California Gold Region 1 embraces the eastern area of Southern California from Death Valley to the Mexican Border. It includes Death Valley, Needles, Blythe, Glamis, Picacho and Brawley. Some of the mountain ranges in California Gold Region 1 are Nopah, Big Maria, Cargo Muchacho, Chocolate, Chuckwalla, Panamint, Providence, Funeral, Inyo and Whipple. There are gold sites in California Gold Region 1 within fifty miles of Las Vegas along Interstate 15. Sites occur west of Needles near Interstate 40, west of Blythe near Interstate 10 and along the California side of the Colorado River north of Interstate 8 just a few miles north of Yuma, Arizona. Big Ten's California Gold Map 1 covers California Gold Region 1. It shows 405 gold mines and prospecting sites from official geological records of the State of California and the federal government. Specific gold deposit sites are shown in the eastern part of these counties: Imperial Inyo Riverside San Bernardino Gold sites continue to the west on Maps 2, 3 and 4. GOLD MINES AND GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 1 California Division of Mines and Geology Bulletin 193 mentions that mining was done by Spaniards as early as 1780-81 in the Cargo Muchacho Gold District, about 15 miles northwest of Yuma, Arizona. Later, mining was resumed under Mexican rule. This is believed to be the first gold mined in what is now the State of California. The Cargo Muchacho District received it's name of Cargo Muchacho, or Loaded Boy, when two young Mexican boys came into camp one evening with their shirts loaded with gold. American miners became interested in this district after the end of the Mexican War in 1848. Large scale mining was done there to depths of 1,000 feet. The Potholes and Picacho mining districts also lie in the southeastern part of Imperial County, about 50 miles east of El Centro and 20 miles north of Yuma. Small scale mining began in the Potholes District when California was 2
  • 3. Haytham Al Fiqi Books: http://amzn.to/27nSCB9 under Spanish rule. The district was named Potholes because the gold was found in small depressions or pots. As many as 500 Mexicans and Indians could be seen working the dry washes. It is probable that the Spanish mined the Picacho District as early as 1780. Gold has also been mined in the Chocolate Mountains in Imperial County, notably northeast of Glamis. The Chuckwalla district, in the Chuckwalla Mountains of Southeastern Riverside County , was organized in the 1880's and mining continued through the early 1900's. There is a considerable number of mines in this area. Gold has been mined in the Clark Mountain Range in San Bernardino County since the early 1880's, and since at least 1882 in the Ivanpah District, both of which are just off of Interstate 15 and about 35 miles northeast of Baker. Many gold deposits have been discovered through the years both east and west of Death Valley National Monument in Inyo County. COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 1 The eastern area of Southern California is dry and hot. This has not deterred modern-day prospectors from hunting for gold with metal detectors during the cooler seasons. They use their metal detectors to scan placers for nuggets in the dry washes and the tailings from earlier mining operations. Other prospectors employ dry washers to recover fine gold and nuggets. The hundreds of dry washes originating in, and coming down from, the mountain ranges offer opportunities to find more gold. Prospectors from Arizona, Nevada, and other states cross into California to prospect in California Gold Region 1. California Gold Region Two CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 2 California Gold Region 2 includes the southernmost part of Southern California from the Mexican Border northward to Santa Ana and Riverside and eastward to El Centro, the Salton Sea and Joshua Tree National Monument. It embraces San Diego, Escondido, Anaheim, Hemet, Julian, Palm Springs and Indio. Some of the mountain ranges in the region are Laguna, San Ysidro, Santa Ana, Elsinore, Little San Bernardino and San Jacinto. 3
  • 4. Haytham Al Fiqi Books: http://amzn.to/27nSCB9 The national forests in California Gold Region 2 are Cleveland and San Bernardino. There are gold sites throughout the region and near San Diego, Escondido, Riverside, Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Monument. Big Ten's California Gold Map 2 covers California Gold Region 2. It shows 340 gold mines and prospecting sites from official geological records of the State of California and the federal government. Specific gold deposit sites are shown in parts of these counties: Imperial Orange Riverside San Diego Gold sites continue to the east on Map 1 and to the north on Map 3. GOLD MINES AND GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 2 Many people are surprised to learn of the vast extent of gold mining and prospecting sites in Southern California. This is due in part to the massive amount of publicity directed toward history of the discovery of gold in the Mother Lode area of the state and the resulting California Gold Rush. However, the early prospectors found gold in Southern California, including in California Gold Region 2. The San Ysidro Mountains a few miles east of Chula Vista and 20 miles southeast of San Diego is the location of the Dulzura Gold District. Placer gold was discovered here in 1828 and lode mining began in 1890. The deposits consist of broken and crushed quartz containing gold. The Escondido District is 25 miles north of San Diego. Mexicans mined the rich surface ores here many years ago and there was considerable activity in this district in the 1890's and early 1900's. The Laguna District lies about 45 miles east-northeast of San Diego in the Laguna Mountains. The Cuyamaca District is a few miles northwest of the Laguna District. The Pine Valley District in San Diego County includes Descanso and is just off of Interstate 8 about 35 miles east of San Diego. Directly east of Escondido is the famous Julian-Banner District, which, together with the Cuyamaca and Pinacote Districts, were prime sources of gold in Region 2. The Pinacote District is in the hills of western Riverside County between Perris and Lake Elsinore. The area of the Pinacote District was placer mined in the 1850's and there was considerable activity after discovery of a major vein in 1874, and until 1903. Some other Region 2 gold districts were: Boulder Creek, about 5 miles west of Cuyamaca; Deer Park, about 6 miles south of Cuyamaca Rancho State 4

The rich Dale or Virginia Dale District is in southern San Bernardino County and northern Riverside County. It extends into California Gold Region 2 about 50 miles east-northeast of Palm Springs. There are many gold deposit sites between Palm Springs and the Dale District. COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 2 California Gold Region 2 is a good part of the state for outdoor recreation, including recreational gold prospecting and gold panning. It has the Cleveland National Forest and the San Bernardino National Forest. Gold sites are within easy driving distance of the areas of major population and the clear, mild weather is ideal for outdoor activities. Camping and RV facilities are excellent. If you should read about gold in the other California gold regions, just scroll down to the point in the text where the particular region is discussed and continue on from there. Since the days of the California gold rush in 1849, prospectors, treasure hunters and vacationers have flocked to California to hunt for gold. They use gold pans, sluice boxes, metal detectors, dredges and dry washers in their prospecting efforts. Rockhounding is done in the gold producing areas. Recreational gold panning is a popular hobby in California. A simple gold pan is effective in detecting and recovering gold from a streambed. Metal detectors are used to detect nuggets in the dry washes, dry streambeds and desert areas. Inexpensive light weight sluice boxes are often used in flowing streams to increase the amount of material being washed for gold. Dry washers are used to recover gold in arid areas. Experienced prospectors may be seen dredging for California gold. However, if you want to find some 5

The great California Gold Rush was of such importance, and has received so much publicity, that many people are not aware that the California Gold Rush was preceded by gold rushes in the Southeastern States. The first documented discovery of gold in the United States was in North Carolina in 1799 and gold mining started there in 1803. A major gold rush took place in Georgia in 1828 and a lesser rush occurred in Alabama in the 1830's. Most of the gold mining districts in the West were located by pioneers, many of whom were experienced gold miners from Alabama and Georgia. Gold mining and prospecting sites in California range from the Mexican border to the Oregon state line and eastward to the Arizona and Nevada state lines. Both Northern and Southern California provide ample locations where you may pan for gold. Knowledge of those places where gold has been found earlier is useful in searching for more gold. Prior work by geologists of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the U.S. Geological Survey and the California Division of Mines and Geology is acknowledged. Of special mention is the prior work of William B. Clark and Ralph Loyd of the California Division of Mines and Geology and that of Waldemar P. Lindgren of the U.S. Geological Survey. The excellent California Division of Mines and Geology Bulletin 193, by William B. Clark, was drawn upon for details of specific gold districts throughout the state and for text regarding the Klamath Mountains region of Northern California. Lindgren's work published in the year 1911 as regards the ancient Tertiary Rivers is considered a classic. Note: The above paragraphs to this point are common to each of the six (6) California gold regions. There are heavy localized concentrations of gold sites as well as isolated deposits. Ninety six (96) gold deposit sites are within 30 miles of Pasadena. There are one hundred twenty five (125) sites within 40 miles of Big Bear Lake in San Bernardino County and fifty (50) sites in the area neighboring Frazier Mountain in Ventura County. Placer gold was mined in the San Gabriel Mountains as early as 1834 in the Acton District about 20 miles north of Los Angeles. Lode mining began there about 1880 and a number of mines in the district were active in the 1900's. The Piru District is in northeastern Ventura County near Piru Creek and just south of the Frazier Mountain District. Gold from placer mining in the Piru District was shipped to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia in 1842. The Saugus District, also known as the Newhall District and the San Gabriel District, includes a number of canyons and the Santa Clara River in the vicinity of the city of Newhall in Los Angeles County. Placer mining has been carried on here with gold being recovered from gravels in stream channels and from benches and terraces along the banks. Placer gold has been recovered in some of the canyons and washes along the south flank of the San Gabriel Mountains north and east of Los Angeles. Two 7
  • 8. Haytham Al Fiqi Books: http://amzn.to/27nSCB9 of the most important sources have been the San Gabriel Canyon, near Azusa, and the Tujunga Canyon to the west. Some other concentrations of gold deposits occur to the east of George Air Force Base and around the city of Barstow. There is a group of 25 gold mines and prospects near the San Bernardino County/Riverside County line 10 miles south of Twentynine Palms. Another 15 to 20 miles to the east, and bridging the foregoing county lines, is the prolific Dale Mining District. Many gold sites in east-central San Bernardino County are west of the Ward Valley on both sides of Interstate 40, and on both sides of the Fenner Valley. This area has hundreds of dry washes. COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 3 The varied topography of this area enhances the recreational prospecting experience. California Gold Region 3 has many physical variations, such as mountains, canyons, valleys, streams, dry washes and a desert. Novice and experienced prospectors with gold pans or metal detectors enjoy panning and detecting in the Angeles National Forest north of the greater Los Angeles area and in the San Bernardino National Forest northeast of San Bernardino. Metal detectors and dry washers are used in the arid parts of California Gold . CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 4 California Gold Region 4 embraces Fresno, Bakersfield, Visalia, Porterville, Mohave, Randsburg, Johannesburg, Ridgecrest, China Lake, Trona, Fort Irwin, Independence, Lone Pine and Darwin. National Forests in California Gold Region 4 include Sequoia, Sierra and Inyo. GOLD MINES AND GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 4 California Gold Region 4 in Southern California is host to important gold deposits; a few of which follow: There is a concentration of gold sites five miles south of Mohave and another west of Fort Irwin, about 20 miles from Barstow. Heavy concentrations occur along the Kern River and at Isabella Lake east of the Greenhorn Mountains. California state road 178 parallels the Kern River. More sites exist in Sequoia National Forest east of Bakersfield. The numerous gold deposits in the area surrounding Randsburg and Johannesburg and in the El Paso mountains northwest of Randsburg have been of considerable interest to prospectors and miners since the 1880's. Dry placer gold has been found in Red Rock Canyon, Mesquite Canyon, Goler Gulch and Red Bluffs. Gold-bearing sands and gravel occur in benches and in the hillsides above the canyons and on bedrock in the washes and canyons themselves. The gold particles are round and appear to have suffered considerable abrasion. The gold is mostly fine, although nuggets up to several ounces have been found. There are some narrow gold-quartz veins present. The Rademacher Gold District is about 15 miles north of Randsburg and about 5 miles south of Ridgecrest. Faults and quartz veins exist in this district, which has 25 gold mines. Many gold sites are in and between the Argus Mountain Range west of Trona and the Slate Mountain Range east of Trona. This area bridges the Inyo County/ San Bernardino County line east of the U.S. Naval Weapons Center. There are trails leading to the gold mines and dry washes here. North and northeast of Fresno, gold sites are located in California Gold Region 4 near the Millerton Lake State Recreation Area and Pine Flat Lake. There are sites in Sierra National Forest and Sequoia National Forest north and south of the Kings River in Fresno County. Inyo County has many gold deposits in and around the Owens Valley, north of Lone Pine, and in the vicinity of Darwin, south of state highway 190. 9
  • 10. Haytham Al Fiqi Books: http://amzn.to/27nSCB9 COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 4 In this region you will be prospecting for California gold in an interesting part of the United States, which boasts the giant redwood trees. Time permitting, you may wish to drive through the beautiful twisting mountain road leading down into Kings Canyon and the Kings River in Kings Canyon National Park. The many existing gold sites in California Gold Region 4 testify to the great interest in prospecting here in the past. Use a gold pan in the streams and a metal detector or dry washer in arid locations. CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 5 California Gold Region 5 is in Northern California and extends from Millerton Lake State Recreation Area, in Fresno County, about 40 miles south of Yosemite National Park, northward to about five miles north of Quincy, in Plumas County. It extends eastward from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe and the Nevada state line. Gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848, which led to the California Gold Rush in 1849. California Gold Region 5 embraces Yosemite National Park, Mono Lake, Sacramento, Carmichael, Columbia, Auburn, Placerville, Nevada City, Grass Valley, Angels Camp, Yuba City, Marysville, Oroville, Paradise, Magalia, Downieville, Mariposa, Coarse Gold, Coloma and Jamestown. Because of the proliferation of gold deposits here, California Gold Region 5 is known as the California Mother Lode. There is no fixed definition of the boundaries of the "Mother Lode", and actually no true "mother lode" exists. Some geologists define the boundaries as extending further southeast into California Gold Region 4 and further northwest into region 6. In any case, this is a very gold-rich area that has drawn worldwide attention and stimulated migration to California. Pioneers flocked westward across the U. S. plains in covered wagons and people came from Germany, China and other countries to seek gold in California. California's largest true gold nugget weighed 54 pounds troy. It was found in California Gold Region 5 at Magalia, in Butte County. Big Ten's California Gold Map 5 covers California Gold Region 5. It shows 3,000 gold mines and prospecting sites from official geological records of the State of California and the federal government. Recreational panning and sluicing is done in the hundreds of streams that lace the region. Hard rock lode mining is done by established mining companies. Much hydraulic mining was done in the past. Some of the gold-bearing rivers are: Yuba, Feather, American, Calaveras, Merced, Cosumnes, Tuolumne and Stanislaus. Tributaries to these rivers have also produced gold. COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 5 Gold panning may be done in the eight national forests that cover much of the region: El Dorado, Tahoe, Plumas, Lassen, Sierra, Stanislaus, Inyo and Toiyabe. There are many beautiful streams in the national forests where gold may be found. The dry remains of the ancient rivers of the Tertiary Period are shown on California Gold Map 5. The ancient rivers are discontinuous today, with some parts of them being in the sides of mountains and other parts buried under lava flows from the volcanoes that erupted in the past. These ancient rivers were a major source of gold in the present-day rivers. According to Lindgren, some gravel deposits in the Tertiary rivers were 250 feet deep, with gold occurring at various levels within the gravels. Remains of the ancient rivers are actively prospected and mined. Many people have long harbored a desire to find gold in the California Mother Lode region. With the advent of motorhomes, travel trailers and other recreational vehicles, many prospectors are fulfilling that dream. 11

  • 14. Haytham Al Fiqi Books: http://amzn.to/27nSCB9 GOLD MINES AND GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 6 There are many gold districts in this region. The information quoted below is from California Division of Mines and Geology Bulletin 193 by William B. Clark. "The Klamath Mountains region in northwestern California is the second-most gold-productive province in California. The principal gold districts are in Shasta, Siskiyou, and Trinity Counties. Although there are several important lode-gold districts, the placer deposits have been the largest sources of gold. The most productive placer deposits in the Klamath Mountains have been those associated with the Klamath and Trinity Rivers and their tributaries. Gold is found not only in the gravels in the present stream channels, but also in older terrace and bench deposits adjacent to the channels. The terrace and bench deposits often were mined by hydraulicing. Rising in southern Oregon, the Klamath River flows west across the Klamath Mountains and empties into the Pacific Ocean. The most important tributary streams of the Klamath River are the Shasta, Scott, and Salmon Rivers, and Cottonwood, Horse, Seiad, Thompson, Indian, Clear, Dillon, and Camp Creeks. Important centers of placer mining in the Klamath River system have been at Hornbrook, Yreka, Scott Bar, Hamburg, Somesbar, Orleans, Sawyers, Forks of Salmon, Callahan, and Cecilville. The Trinity River, which flows into the Klamath River at Weitchpec, drains the southern portion of the Klamath Mountains. The most productive placer deposits of the Trinity River are those located along its main channel. These include the deposits at Carrville, Trinity Center, Minersville, Lewiston, Weaverville, Junction City, and Salyer. The principal tributaries of the Trinity River are Coffee Creek, Stewart's Fork, East Fork, New River, Indian Creek and Hayfork Creek. The La Grange mine, a few miles west of Weaverville, was one of the largest hydraulic mines in California. Other sources of placer gold in the Klamath Mountains have been the Smith River region in Del Norte County and the upper Sacramento River and its tributaries, which include Backbone, Clear, Cottonwood, and Beegum Creeks. Lode-gold deposits are found throughout the Klamath Mountains. The most productive district has been the French Gulch-Deadwood district of Shasta 14
  • 15. Haytham Al Fiqi Books: http://amzn.to/27nSCB9 and Trinity Counties in the southern portion of the province. Other important sources of lode gold have been the Deadwood district of Siskiyou County (there are several Deadwood districts in California). Dillon Creek, Callahan, Oro Fino, Liberty, Sawyers Bar, Harrison Gulch, Whiskeytown, and Buckeye- Old Diggings districts. Considerable amounts of gold have been produced in the Shasta copper-zinc belt and lesser amounts in other copper deposits, such as the Copper Bluff mine at Hoopa. The gold nearly always occurs in native form in quartz veins, usually associated with pyrite and smaller amounts of other sulfides. The veins occur in all metamorphic rocks of Jurassic and older ages. A few lode-gold deposits are found in granitic rocks." COMMENTS ON GOLD PROSPECTING IN CALIFORNIA GOLD REGION 6 The rugged and beautiful countryside of this region of Northern California has always attracted tourists, adventurers and gold prospectors. There are literally hundreds of places where a person may find gold with a pan. The California gold sites start 50 miles south of Grants Pass, Oregon and 29 miles south of Medford, Oregon. Some of the gold sites southeast of Susanville are only 65 miles from Reno, Nevada. California Gold Region 6 has a number of National Forests where panning is done, including: Shasta, Plumas, Trinity, Six Rivers, Siskiyou, Modoc and Klamath. Large numbers of gold sites occur southwest of Susanville in Plumas County, Lassen County, and Butte County, many of them being in Plumas National Forest. The gold-rich North Fork and East Branch of the North Fork of the Feather River are in this area, as well as Rush Creek and other gold creeks. East of Crescent City there are gold sites at the Smith River. North and south of Crescent City there are a number of beach gold deposits. A string of beach sites known as Gold Bluff is south of where the Klamath River enters the Pacific Ocean. MORE BOOKS Autism - The Complete Guide for Parents https://www.amazon.com/dp/1547004673 15
