Superstition refers to beliefs in supernatural causality between events without a physical process connecting them, such as astrology and omens. The word originated from the Latin "super stare" meaning "to stand over" or "survive." During the Age of Enlightenment, opposition to superstition was a central concern of intellectuals as it contradicted natural science. While some religions incorporated superstitions, the Catholic Church now considers them offenses that assign divine attributes elsewhere. Common superstitions include bad omens associated with black cats, walking under ladders, and certain numbers or gestures considered good or bad luck by various cultures.
