You all know the feeling of being thirsty - it is uncomfortable and we know that when we need water we are not functioning at our best. You all know how a drink of water can revive and refresh how you feel.
The body is 70% water, and needs hydration to function properly. Humans can live between 3-5 days without water, and that is in ideal conditions. There are organisms that can survive indefinitely without oxygen, in boiling temperatures, in freezing environments, even in the radioactive vacuum of space – but absolutely nothing can live without water.
Just as we drink water to keep the body hydrated, we need to find ways to keep the skin hydrated. And it is not as easy as it sounds. Today we are going to discuss how to help the skin receive and retain water. Because as you know, we need need water to thrive – and the skin is no different. Ask yourself and ask your clients - Is your skin feeling thirsty?
As a reminder, Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) is the water that is released from the cell as it moves its way from the Basal layer to the Spinosum Layer during its journey to the surface (Stratum Corneum).
So moisturizers provide a barrier to inhibit water loss and they also lubricate, soften, and make the skin feel and look good temporarily. Humectants add moisture or more accurately hydration to the skin.
So let’s discuss water-loving ingredients or humectants in detail…
Humectants are water-loving ingredients that bind water to the skin to increase water levels in the skin. So basically humectants attract water and help retain water.
Natural humectants are : Glycerin, Honey, Sorbitol, Sugarcane…and Hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid revolutionized skin care because it is a “complex” humectant, capable of attracting 1000 times its own weight in water, whereas simple humectants like glycerin and sorbitol can only attract their own weight in water.
Did you know that Estee Lauder tried to patent Hyaluronic Acid when she brought out her product Night Repair in the early 90’s? It is a “natural” ingredient so cannot be patented.
Intraceuticals uses multiple types and weights of hyaluronic acid to rehydrate, keep skin hydrated, and help reduce water loss in the skin.
Let’s use an analogy to visualize how HA at different weight works in the skin.
Let’s say the low weight molecule has 4 arms that carry water to the skin, while also grabbing other water-loving ingredients, along with the water.
The medium weight molecule has 8 arms to hold water.
and the high weight molecule has 20 arms that carry water.
So by using Intraceuticals 3 Step Hyaluronic Layering – 3 separate products with different weights of Hyaluronic in the skin, we are able to stack Hyaluronic so that the skin is constantly and consistently being supplied with water.
There is tension between the different weights, so we Balance each and every formulation to optimize the way the product works with the skin.

Working with Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic clearly has incredible advantages – you see it every time you do an Intraceuticals treatment, However it is a unique and sensitive ingredient, in that because it is a delivery system, it moves quickly to hydrate deeply but it is also fragile and tends to dissipate or evaporate.
We have found that 50% of the results of the Treatment are lost within the first 24 hours if you don’t use the Hydration Gel and the Moisture Binding Cream to lock the Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic down.
