Global Social CrimesAgainstWomen 2
Social crimes against women have taken a new dimension during the last decade; previously
women were treated as commodities in the male dominated society, then came the era of
women’s uprising in the various fields of education and profession. The beforehand suppressed
and dependent woman was now on one’s slave and was capable of taking control of her own life,
she was claiming equal rights with men, which she deserved also. A great number of studies and
researches have been conducted under the respective subject of women, their rights and their
exploitation in developed and emergent societies. Numerous government policies and laws have
been set up to protect the women’s identity and to bring to halt their mistreatment and
oppression. But still there is a lot to be done.
Though government of different states have taken a considerable measures in favor of women
and their freedom, but it is an open fact that women have been abused, excessively, after the
passing of these laws. The chief reason for the situation is men’s intolerance towards women’s
autonomy, as mentioned earlier; women are no longer dependent on men for their financial and
security needs. The presence of the laws has not ensured women’s safeguard, majority of the
women are still not aware of their rights while the other majority fails to conjure courage to act
against their abusive partners. Women living under deteriorated and underdeveloped societies
and living conditions are more exposed to violent and extreme partner behaviors and take the
matter as a regular thing. The other group of women lives in a abusive relation and knows of
their rights but are too intimidated to take any action against the injustice prevailing. The
scenario leaves only a fraction of women that enjoys full freedom and protection in a true sense.
This research paper will study the social crimes against women, the crimes which exist in nearly
all of the societies of the world and women around the globe are subjected to them. The
continuation of these social crimes makes it apparent that the measures taken to control these

communal evils were not enough or maybe there is some loop in them. Literacy and education
are the essentials of a successful state law or policy; in order to control and stop the ever-
increasing crimes against women it is necessary to educate the women around the world. Media
being the most influential social tool is also the one with uppermost responsibility, unfortunately,
the role of media in enlightening women regarding their social and legal rights does not turn out
to be as effective as it was expected or as it is still expected. The means of media, television,
newspaper, books etc. are not available in backward and remote societies, which keeps them
from their basic human rights.
Katherine Stuart Van Wormer in her Women’s Bid for Equality in the United States in an Era of
Backlash: Two Steps Forward and One Step Back has focused on women’s struggle for her
individuality and equality with men. The article has taken into account the women’s hardships to
gain equality and justice from the early roots of feminism, the classification of feminism and the
patriarchal society’s reaction towards it. From on setting of the First Wave of feminism, 1060s,
women have significantly appeared on the previously occupied places by men; let it be academic
or professional platform. The feature has also observed and stated the effects of women’s
liberation on the community; the society has fallen back into the state of backlash against
women, which is referred as the one ‘step back’ in the article. Women are treated with hostility
as men are now insecure because of their development and progress, domestic violence, date
rape incidents and accusations against women reached to alarming rate. The backlash mentioned
in the feature has appeared in each of the part of the state, social retaliation, condemning of
women in courts by saying that,
“You as the equal of man will be punished like a man.” (Wormer, 2008).
The article has discussed the retaliation against women in two main orbs of the society; firstly
Global Social CrimesAgainstWomen 4
the women are punished for fighting for their fundamental rights as human and women at hands
of the state laws. In older days the families with single mothers were benefited by the policies
designed for their financial advantage, mothers with smaller children could stay at home. But
with the wave of feminism and the passing of amendments meant for women rights, the policies
changed, now women have to work for their survival. Secondly, they were tormented by the
society, media formed a negative propaganda against them and they were subjected to more
domestic and relationship violence.
The article uncovers the negative and depressing role played by media, especially print media, in
female development, the books issued with the themes of female offenders and men victims
gained much acclaim among the society. The article is helpful in understanding the women’s
status in a society despite of her progress and numerous works for female rights. It has also
highlighted the role of media in this respect; the writer has presented the statistical facts as well
which will be helpful in conducting further research in the respective field. As my research is
directed to the social crimes against women and the conditions under women are, the respective
information is advantageous in having a better insight of the real situation related to women.
Explaining the Immigration-Partner Violence Link: Attitudes Towards Partner Violence Among
Latin-American Immigrants in Spain has magnified the partner violence among two groups of
the society, the immigrants of Latin America in Spain and the native born Hispanics. The
conclusions are drawn from the data collected on the respective communities, accordingly the
Latin-American immigrants are found to have more incidences of partner violence against
women. Though both native born Spaniards and Latin-American immigrants have partner or
relationship hostility but it is noteworthy that the victims of the extremities are mostly women
and specifically Latin-American women. The article has taken into concern the main reasons of
Global Social CrimesAgainstWomen 5
disproportionate level of partner violence among both the groups as well as the reasons of this
unevenness. The native born Hispanics are more close to the belief that partner violence should
not be endured in any case, the native Hispanic women encourage reporting of partner violence
to the authorities. On the other hand, the Latin-American immigrants show a considerable high
level of patience towards violence against women, the matter is treated as a normal social and
domestic issue. The women show shoe less fervent in reporting partner brutalities, which often
includes severe beating and even killing also.
The article has pondered over the chief reason of heightened rate of violence amongst the Latin-
American immigrant women. The high level of patience and the blaming of the victim are two of
the main reasons of their severe subjection to violence.
“Victim-blaming attitudes were also associated with attitudes toward reporting partner violence
among Latin-American immigrants” (E. Gracia, J. Herrero2 and M. Lila, 2008).
As relevant to my subject, the article has ample information about the reaction of women of
different communities towards the partner violence. It has also thrown light on the two of the
most apparent reasons of such violence, which is endurance and victim-blaming. Though the
statistical data is about the specific society of Latin-American immigrants and natives but the
reasons presented are the main roots of partner violence worldwide.
AGAINST HER WILL: FORCED AND COERCED STERILIZATION OF WOMEN
WORLDWIDE has uncovered the gravest crime and brutality against women, the article has
presented the prevalence of forced sterilization of women around the globe. The poor, racially
and ethnically minor, disable and HIV positive women are more exposed to such medical
procedures. The women sterilized are often unaware of the procedure, they are not given proper
and full information regarding the sterilization process, and many of the women have reported
Global Social CrimesAgainstWomen 6
that they knew about what happened to them after they gain consciousness after their cesarean.
The poor and women of minorities are considered to be misfits to produce children, they are
forced into sterilization by having them signed consent letter on the operation table, and the
writing is often illegible, in foreign language and in handwritten format. Same is the case with
HIV positive and disabled women, they are not given medicine and proper medical treatment
unless they agree to get sterilized. The children born to such women are thought to be a burden
on the state and useless lots.
The forced sterilization of women belonging to different nationalities and societies has revealed
the extent to which the social crimes against women have increased; unfortunately, there are no
proper and strict measures to control the situation. The article has pointed to the grave reality of
women’s subjugation and violation by ending her fundamental right of giving birth, the
procedure is irreversible. The data and records provided in the article will be helpful in
recognizing the severity to which women are exposed and the reason of state’s failure in
providing them security. The solutions given are also thought worthy.
The articles included state the problems faced by women around the globe, though each of the
articles is related to definite ethnicity and state but it cannot be denied that these are the
dilemmas of every woman. Not only in US, women are fighting for their rights and are subjected
to injustice in nearly each of the state, the high pace of tolerance to partner violence is only the
case of Latin-American women but women of every patriarchal society are exposed to them.
