2. Getting to know Betty
Betty is a character I made up. She is 10
years old. She lived with her younger
sister, Sarah, her mother, Marie, and
her father was out fighting in
Germany.
3.
4. Wednesday
7:00pm: I made some more things
today:
Jewellery from old beer bottle tops,
cup hooks and corks. And I cut up
and old Mackintosh to made a bib for
my baby sister Sarah. Mother and I
also went clothes shopping for the
first time this year. One of the
things I miss during this war is being
able to buy new clothes whenever
we wanted. I love the feel of new
clothes.
5. Thursday
12pm: I am writing this at lunchtime. I simply
cannot eat because I have been told some
horrifying news: I have to be evacuated!
Mrs Daley is sorting out who I am going to
live with. How is my mother going to cope
with little Sarah all by herself?
My host mother is going to be ms Maxell. I
hope I don’t have to do too many chores!!
6. I bet you’re wondering what happened to Betty.
Did she make any friends? Was she treated
well? This is Betty 5 days after evacuating.
7. I had to muck out Barney today (our horse.) Yuck! I also
got a letter from Mother:
8. Dear Betty,
How are you doing? Have you made any new friends?
Sarah has been a pain in the backside and without
you it is more of a struggle than ever! How m I
supposed to build my Anderson shelter and sort my
allotments with her grizzling on my hip? Please write
back. I am missing you so, darling!
Lots of love from
Mother.
I tried my best to copy her lovely handwriting!
9. So Betty missed her mother dreadfully, however
she wrote to her regularly.
I hope this explained what clothes rationing and
evacuation was like. Thanks for watching, bye!
