As the owner and primary physician at the San Diego-based Crosby Square Chiropractic, Steven Rigler assists patients with various back injuries. One way Steven Rigler assists patients is by helping them maintain a good posture, to avoid long-term strain or injury. Maintaining a good posture has many health benefits. By sitting, standing, and performing other actions with good posture, you avoid unnecessary strain on your muscles. You can complete your activities more efficiently while ensuring that your skeletal system is aligned correctly. Failing to maintain good posture, whether stationary or moving, will cause wear and tear on joints and could damage the spine. Good posture, static or dynamic, shares common principles. When lifting an object, whether sitting or standing, distribute your weight evenly, with particular attention on your hips. Ensure that the object you are using, like a workstation, or object you are lifting, is comfortably close to you to decrease the strain on your upper back and arms. While sitting, place your feet flat on the floor, or use a footrest and lumbar supports placed at the three curves in your neck, mid-back, and lower back to straighten your spine. While lying down, avoid sleeping in positions that place strain on your back, like on your side with your knees drawn up to your chest or on your stomach. For example, by sleeping on your back, you distribute weight evenly. You can sleep comfortably on your side by bending your knees slightly. Placing a rolled-up sheet or towel, lumbar support bar, or pillow on the natural curves in your back can support them, even while you sleep. When getting up from bed, don’t bend forward at the waist; instead, turn to lie on your side and swing your legs off the side of the bed.
