INTRODUCTION
This total lunar eclipse is the last eclipse for the year 2022; it will be visible from 09:10 GMT to 12:50 GMT on 08
November 2022 in most parts of the world including Asia, Australia, parts of Europe, South and North America (1).
In Kuala Lumpur, the local time for total lunar eclipse on Tuesday, 08 November 2022 starts at 18:53:00, and ends
at 21:56:00 (2). The process begins when Moon enters the penumbral phase, moves to partial umbral phase, and
finally moves to total lunar eclipse. Moon remains under total lunar eclipse for some time; it then returns to partial
umbral and penumbral phases before it comes out of eclipse completely (3). A lunar eclipse can only take place
when the Moon is in its full phase, that is, Full Moon (4) or Purnima day.
DECODING ASTRONOMICAL PHENOMENON OF LUNAR ECLIPSE
A lunar eclipse (Chandra grahan) happens when planet Earth is aligned in between Sun and Moon. The Earth
blocks out sunlight and casts a shadow over the Moon thereby causing darkness over the Moon (5). The lunar orbit
is tilted at 5 degrees to the orbital plane of the Earth which is termed as the ecliptic (see Figure 1). The orbit of
Moon intersects Earth’s orbital plane at two points known as ‘nodes’. So, there are two points of intersection
between the two orbital planes. When Moon crosses the ascending node (north node), it moves north of the ecliptic,
and when it crosses the descending node (south node) it moves south of the ecliptic (6). For a total or annular
eclipse to occur, the Moon must pass precisely through a node. The Moon crosses the two nodes every month as
it orbits the Earth. Usually, the New Moon passes above or below a node. To have a solar eclipse, the New Moon
must be near or at a node (6,7).

DECODING MYTHOLOGY OF ECLIPSES
Myths on eclipses are often narrated in the form of a beast-like creature like a dragon or a snake trying to take
revenge by swallowing Sun or Moon. In Hindu mythology, a truncated snake (Rahu - snake head without tail; Ketu
- snake tail without head) is the culprit in causing grahanam or eclipses as mentioned in the event of Samudra
Manthan (churning of elixir of immortality out of the ocean) (8). According to the Babylonians, eclipses were omens
of impending death of a king (9). The fear element is highlighted in the storyline of eclipses (grahanam) which are
regarded as inauspicious by the Hindus. As such, Hindu temples doors are shut on an eclipse day (10). Be it a solar
eclipse or lunar eclipse, the overshadowing of one planet by another is perceived as an evil omen (11).
DECODING ASTROLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF ECLIPSES
The effect of lunar eclipse on a person’s life can be felt before and after an eclipse depending on the zodiac sign
relative to other planetary positions, strengths, and nakshatras in his or her natal chart. Eclipse energy can be subtle
or volatile. The celestial messages of eclipses are generally decoded as something forthcoming in a mysterious or
unexpected way to usher in a new beginning or ending a period of dissatisfactory life experiences due to conflict,
chao, uncertainty, tension or turmoil in a family, communal or societal setting. Usually solar eclipse (New Moon) is
associated with a beginning while lunar eclipse (Full Moon) is associated with an ending. A lunar eclipse will fall
into two diagonally opposite zodiac signs or houses of a natal chart while a solar eclipse will fall into one zodiac
sign or house of a natal chart.

Table I shows the proximity of Rahu, Moon and Uranus Rx in the fire sign of Aries, and they share the same
Bharani nakshatra. For example, Rahu is at 18◦ 52’53.97” in Bharani, pada 2; Moon is at 21◦ 46’41.60” in Bharani,
pada 3; and Uranus Rx is at 22◦ 45’49.00” in Bharani, pada 3.
From astrological perspective, Rahu (north node of Moon) is demonic with an illusionary energy that can inflate an
individual’s or a nation’s ego, and amplify greed for abundant resources to fuel the ambition of expanding material
desires. Rahu conjunct Moon creates ideological extremism in the pursuit of self-gratification.
In many cultures, Moon is perceived as a female planet with the feminine quality of reproduction (fertility). In
astrology, Moon represents liquid, fluctuating emotions, mind, mother, and the public. Full Moon in Aries is afflicted
by two malefics, Rahu and Uranus in retrogration (Rx). Uranus is an outer planet of disruption, innovation, rebellion
and sudden change. Uranus Rx means that its apparent ‘backward’ movement is slowing down the process of
provoking chaos in order to review and reset subsequent reform strategies.
When Rahu, Moon and Uranus Rx occupy the same fire sign of Aries ruled by Mars, their collective energies
can easily arouse an emotional influx of sensational responses to any external stimuli leading to mental restlessness
and obsession to gain public attention on one’s struggle to reform for progress. For example, the recent uprising of
anti-hijab feminine movement in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini on 13 September 2022 has spread to
several countries including India where Kerala Muslim women burn hijabs in solidarity with protesters in Iran (12).
Hair cutting, hijab burning, and attacks on clerics are on-going activities in Iran. It was reported that 133 people
were killed and thousands were arrested (13). In South Korea, an emotionally-inspired Halloween event on Saturday
29 October 2022 took away the lives of 156 festive goers in a stampede along crowded narrow alleys of Itaewon
district (14).
Furthermore, this Full Moon lunar eclipse in Aries Bharani is symbolised by a female reproductive organ to
represent a painful birthing process. The horns of Aries (ram) are said to resemble ovaries. Bharani is ruled by
Venus, and governed by Yama (god of death) to convey the message regarding the incredible feminine quality of
endurance under stressful situations arising from Covid19 pandemic which triggers negative consequences such
as business downsizing and closure, retrenchment, energy crisis, food shortages, inflation, looting, political conflict,
recession, supply chain disruption, stock market crash, weakening currency value of many countries including
4. 4
Malaysia and United Kingdom. Malaysian Ringgit is falling against major currencies due to weak economic
fundamentals and political uncertainty over the outcome of 15th
General Election (GE15) scheduled on Saturday
19 November 2022. This GE15 is dubbed as the ‘Mother of all elections’ (15) by political parties vying to be the
winner with a simple majority of 112 seats in the 222-seat lower house of parliament (16) to form Malaysia’s new
government for the next 4-5 years.
Emotionally-charged election campaign speeches by candidates in GE15 from political parties especially Pakatan
Harapan (PH) Coalition always highlight the key issues facing the country: a) massive financial leakages due to
corrupt practices, b) mismanagement of national resources, c) poverty, and d) rising cost of living amid inflation,
unemployment, and weakening of Ringgit Malaysia. First-time young voters are eager to cast their votes for a
change to a clean, capable government (17). A change to a corruption-free administrative system is tough - a painful
struggle for the opposition parties but it is possible with heightened collective consciousness under the influence of
Bharani.
Besides Uranus Rx, there are three other retrograde planets on 08 November 2022, namely, Mars Rx in Gemini
Mrigashira, pada 3; Neptune Rx in Aquarius Purva Bhadrapada, pada 3; and Jupiter Rx in Pisces Uttara
Bhadrapada, pada 1 (see Chart A and Table I). Retrogression may produce a mix of positive and negative
outcomes. However, astrology literature does suggest the overall effect of a retrograde planet on the affairs of the
house or sign it occupies tends to yield more negative than positive results.
This total lunar eclipse will also impact the air sign of Libra (diagonally opposite to Aries); it is tenanted by transiting
Ketu, Mercury, Sun and Venus (see Chart A). A stellium occurs because three (3) planets are transiting in the
same zodiac sign of Libra ruled by Venus. Ketu is at 18◦ 52’53.97” in Swati, pada 4; Mercury is at 21◦ 43’03.68” in
Vishaka, pada 1; Sun is at 21◦ 51’27.33” in Vishaka, pada 1; and Venus is at 26◦ 04’08.30” in Vishaka, pada 2
(see Table I). Note that Mercury and Venus conjunct Sun could possibly result in underperformance due to
combustion by the extreme heat of Sun. There are two lunar constellations namely Swati and Vishaka.
Swati is ruled by Rahu, and governed by Vayu (god of air / wind); it is symbolised by a sword or a young plant shoot
swaying in the wind to indicate independence, self-reliance to survive. Vishaka is ruled by Jupiter, and governed
by Indragni (Indra: king of heaven; Agni: god of sacrificial fire). It is also known as the Star of Purpose symbolised
by a triumphal arch to indicate that success is achievable with a focus on targeted goal.
Ketu (south node of Moon) is a demonic force to reduce or remove any material excesses in order to achieve
spiritual growth and liberation (Moksha). Mercury is a neuter planet of communications (broadcasting, publication,
speech, transportation, travelling, and writing), commerce, and intelligence. Sun is a male planet representing
authority, father, government, leader, ruler, and soul aspiration. However, transiting Sun is in its debilitated sign of
Libra. Venus is a female planet of arts, beauty, luxury and pleasure. This cosmic concentration of a stellium in Libra
builds up tension in building relationships with others, and formulating a partnership agreement acceptable to
interested parties. Libra stands for balance, compromise, diplomacy, fairness, and relationship. Having 3
planets in a single sign or astrological house essentially means that leadership requires the right mix of hard
and soft skills to overcome challenges in the pursuit of meeting targeted goals.
Reference to Chart A and Table I, transiting Pluto is at 01◦ 50’40.00” in Uttara Ashadha, pada 2. It is an impactful
outer planet of destruction, death, and dramatic transformation. Saturn: is at 24◦ 39’39.56” in Danishta, pada 1. It
is a Karmic planet of discipline, delay, hardwork, justice, old age, patience, restriction, and tragedy. Placement of
Pluto and Saturn in Capricorn is significant in astrology because these two planets in the same zodiac sign will
generate intense energy to cause many countries to undergo a long period of economic, political and social
instability. The negative impact of Pluto-Saturn conjunction is manifested in instances such as collapse of
government, casualties arising from work and non-work activities, illegal migration, protests, riots, and wars,
imprisonment of business and political leaders linked to scandals, destruction of established structures and
systems, power struggles for geographical expansion and control as in the case of Russia versus Ukraine; China
versus Taiwan, and territorial dispute in the South China Sea.

CONCLUSION
This article has demonstrated to the audience how to decode messages of lunar eclipse in Aries on 08 November
2022 into plain text that can be useful for astrological analysis and interpretation. This total lunar eclipse is
happening now, and significant to United Sates of America (USA) which is holding its midterm election. As for
Malaysia, the effect of lunar eclipse can also impact the on-going GE15 election campaign rallies by several political
parties around the country. However, this article is not intended to predict which political party can emerge as the
winner or outcomes of elections in USA or Malaysia.
