початковою формою іншого
дієслова без частки to.

4. Модальні дієслова
✔ Ніколи не змінюються відносно
особи. Вживаються лише у
простих часах (Indefinite /
Simple Tenses)
She needs hurry up.
It mights rain.

5. Модальні дієслова
✔ У питаннях та запереченнях
вживаються напряму без
допоміжного дієслова to do:
Do you can help me?
Can you help me?
He does not may like it.
He may not like it.

6. Модальні дієслова
She may can come tomorrow.
She can come tomorrow.
✔ Ніколи не вживаються разом із
іншим модальним дієсловом.

7. Can – могти
✔ Виражає фізичну або розумову здатність,
уміння або можливість виконати дію:
I can carry this bags.
She can speak French.
✔ Виражає дозвіл або заборону (при
запереченні):
You can use the dictionary on exam.
We cannot smoke here.

8. Could – могти
✔ Виражає фізичну або розумову здатність,
уміння або можливість виконати дію
в минулому:
I could not sleep last night.
He could read without glasses last year.
✔ Виражає прохання (через запитання):
Could you repeat that please?
✔ Виражає пропозиція:
You could try doing this

9. May – можна, можливо
✔ Виражає ймовірність, припущення з
відтінком впевненості:
He may help you.
The teacher may be late today
✔ Виражає дозвіл або ввічливе прохання:
May I use your phone?
You may do whatever you want.
✔ Побажання, привітання (нехай):
May this year bring you happiness and health!

10. Might – можна, можливо
✔ Виражає ймовірність, припущення з
відтінком невпевненості:
They must be eating lunch
She must give us a discount
Виражає докір:
You might be more attentive.

11. Should/Ought – слід
✔ Виражають думку, моральний обов'язок,
пораду, рекомендацію, очікування:
You should visit her at the hospital.
You ought not to work for those people.
✔ Дієслово ought – офіційний варіант. Після
ought основне дієслово завжди
вживається із часткою to:
You ought to wait. It will be another bus soon.
✔ Дієслово should виражає подив, обурення
в риторичних запитаннях з Why:

12. Must / Have to – повинен
✔ Виражає обов'язок та необхідність.
(В минулому часі вживається лише had to):
Mother must take care of her child.
To catch the train I had to get up at 6 a.m.
✔ Виражає заборону або наказ:
You must not talk aloud in the reading hall.
You must write report tomorrow.
✔ Виражає сильне переконання:
She must be over 80 years old now.

13. Need – потрібно
✔ Виражає потребу та необхідність.
Основне дієслово після need вживається
із часткою to:
We need to inform about our arrival.
I broke my glasses. I need to buy new one.
✔ Дієслово need використовується з
допоміжнім дієсловом to do у питанні та
запереченні; з will в майбутньому часі:
Do you need money?
We do not need to go to school on Sunday.
I will need this book in a trip.

14. Dare – сміти
✔ Означає мати сміливість або зухвальство
зробити щось. Вживається переважно у
питаннях і запереченнях. Дієслово dare
використовується з допоміжнім
дієсловом to do у питанні та запереченні;
з will в майбутньому часі. Дієслово після
dare вживається із часткою to:
How dare you say it?
I do not dare to come without your permission.

15. Will / Would
✔ Виражає обіцянку:
I will cook delicious dinner for you.
I will help you to solve this task.
✔ У питальних реченнях виражає ввічливе
прохання, запрошення, пропозицію
(неформально):
Will you go for a walk with me?
Would you like some coffee?

16. Shall
✔ Виражає обіцянку, погрозу, пересторогу,
попередження (в США рідко вживається):
You shall not irritate me.
You shall know everything I know.
✔ У питальних реченнях виражає
розпорядження, вказівку або пропозицію:
Shall I turn on the light?
Shall I help you with your luggage?
