3. Mission Statement
The mission of The Rotary Foundation is “to enable
Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill,
and peace through the improvement of health, the
support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.”

4. History
The Foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary
International’s Sixth President, Arch C. Klumph, as an
endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world." It
started with an initial contribution of US $26.50.
The Foundation was formally named “The Rotary
Foundation” at the Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
Convention in 1928.

5. Sources of Support
Polio Plus Fund - dedicated to global polio eradication.
Annual Fund - primary source of funding for Foundation
grants and activities.
Endowment Fund - which supports the Foundation in
perpetuity.

6. Polio Plus Fund
Launched in 1985.
Primarily supportive of global efforts to end Polio.
Instrumental in starting Global Polio Eradication
Initiative by World Health Assembly in 1988.
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation supported the campaign by
issuing a USD 100 million challenge in 2007.

7. Annual Fund
Primary funding source for Foundation grants and
activities.
Supports local and international grants through the
SHARE system.
Contributions credited to individual donor and the
donor’s club and are applied for the club and districts
annual goals.

8. Endowment Fund
Contributions are invested in perpetuity.
Only earnings out of the Investments are spent.
Offers donors a way to create their own lasting legacy
through Rotary.
