4. 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets,
the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people
for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of
the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole
measure of the fullness of Christ.

6. 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same
Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds
of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different
kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone
it is the same God at work.

7. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is
given for the common good. 8 To one there is given
through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another
a message of knowledge by means of the same
Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to
another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
10 to another miraculous powers, to another
prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits,
to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,
and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit,
and he distributes them to each one, just as he
determines.

11. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all
together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the
blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and
filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that
separated and came to rest on each of them.
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit
enabled them.

12. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every
nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came
together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own
language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these
who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears
them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites;
residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene;
visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans
and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own
tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another,
“What does this mean?”

to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.

20. Tongues – edifies themselves
Prophecy/Interpretation – edifies the church
1 Corinthians 14:4
Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves,
but the one who prophesies edifies the church.

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of

22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for
unbelievers; prophecy, however, is not for
unbelievers but for believers.
