Development of the “Destination for All” label in France
Annette Masson, President of the Association Tourisme et Handicaps (ATH), France
For the past 12 years, the Association Tourisme & Handicaps has been working to
offer free access to vacations and entertainment to people living with a disability. The
Association favours an adapted touristic approach as opposed to a general approach
which is why we developed the Tourism and Disability label that takes the four
groups of disabilities into consideration: auditory, intellectual, motor and visual.
The label Tourism & Disability is a proof of recognition that keeps its promises and
a quality assurance for clients who are planning their vacations and looking for
entertainment.
A MOTIVATED DEMAND, AN ADAPTED OFFER
Opening a new and gigantic market
It’s a gigantic market, a network of opinions and prescriptions: business comitees,
social action services, travel agencies and associations, that showed great interest
and surprise when taking notice of the existences of a true answer to the needs of
their members and clients who were looking for services adapted for the disabled, but
also for their families, for seniors, and that would offer them the chance to take a
vacation “just like everyone else and with everyone else”.
Create a rigorous, diversified and trustworthy offer that will last.
Distributed throughout the French territory (Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion
island included) 5313* structures labeled Tourism & Disability are examples of
adapted answers.
3000 qualified accomodations, furnished flats, hotels, and rooms along with a
hundred centres, vacation villages and camping grounds.
The cultural sites : museums and eco-museums, castles, arts and craft workshops,
astonishing sites, are mobilizing into more than 400 labeled establishments.
Outdoor and sport activities: pedestrian trails, beaches, parks and gardens, fishing
structures, pools, leisure bases, equestrian centres... and 500 touristic offices
complete this offer.
*as of September 8th 2014
The label Tourism and Disability is: an essential step to define new
requirements
The label Tourism & Disability constitute the first essential step towards the
development of accesses to leisure and vacations for the disabled.
Following the development of the label Tourism and Disability, the City of
Bordeaux has received the label Destination for All created in 2013, for two types of
disabilities, Intellectual and Motor.
The label Destination for All’s objective is to reward the territories that promote a
coherent global offer, that integrate the accessibility aspect of touristic sites, but also
that facilitate the daily life and travels throughout their respective land, and that
includes the additional aspect of accessibility for the entire travel process.
