Creating a foundation for welcoming all visitors to your cultural institution

Many travelers with disabilities do not know what to expect of cultural institutions, and
may shy away from visiting for this reason. The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston,
has created a strong foundation of accessibility across the Museum. The goal is to
have choices, inclusion, and a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.
A review of all areas, from the website to frontline staff training, prompted a plan that
has allowed the Museum to provide both specific accommodation and open ended,
self-guided possibilities for a wide range of visitors. As access is a process, a plan
rooted in the visitor experience means that the MFA will continue to move forward
and adapt to the needs of our visitors.
The benefits of this work towards greater inclusion and options for all visitors are
noticeable, from the numbers of visitors borrowing wheelchairs to those engaging in
tours for people who are blind, borrowing assistive listening devices, and so forth. In
addition, complaints from visitors with disabilities are few, and enthusiasm over
opportunity is reported back on a regular basis.

Plusieurs voyageurs qui vivent avec un handicap ne savent pas trop à quoi s’attendre
des institutions culturelles et c’est pourquoi ils évitent souvent de visiter ces
établissements. Le Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston, a adopté plusieurs mesures
importantes pour faciliter l’accès au Musée. L’objectif était d’offrir plusieurs choix aux
visiteurs, dans un environnement inclusif et accueillant.
Après avoir analysé divers aspects, qu’il s’agisse du site web ou de la formation des
employés, le Musée a mis sur pied un plan qui permet d’offrir des avantages précis
et adaptables, et la possibilité pour la multitude de visiteurs d’accéder aux collections
de façon autonome. L’accessibilité est un processus en soi, et la planification est
directement associée à la satisfaction des visiteurs, ce qui signifie que le MFA a
l’intention de poursuivre ses efforts pour répondre aux besoins particuliers de chaque
visiteur.
Les bénéfices apportés par cette mesure inclusive et par les options offertes aux
visiteurs sont évidents puisqu’un nombre élevé d’entre eux profite désormais du
service d’emprunt de chaises roulantes ou des visites guidées pour les aveugles
avec l’aide d’équipements de description audio, etc. De plus, le nombre de plaintes
provenant de visiteurs a fortement diminué et les commentaires de visiteurs qui nous
font régulièrement part de leur enthousiasme en sont la preuve.
