DriveSafe Portable Storage Security Advisor: Bill Nicholson Introduction Portable Universal Serial Bus (USB) flash drives are a convenient way to carry information for students or workers that often work in different locations. These drives are frequently forgotten or lost, resulting in the monetary loss of the drive itself, lost time and effort put into the files contained on the drive, and the loss of any sensitive information on the drive to anyone who may find it. Drivesafe is a program that resides on any portable storage device and provides an increased level of security as well as a means of recovering the physical drive and the data contained within it. Drivesafe will password-protect, encrypt, and hide all the files contained on the drive. In the event of unauthorized access, Drivesafe will first notify the drive owner via email, including the IP (Internet Protocol) address and computer name used to access the drive. Then, the program will begin to upload the contents of the drive to a remote location where they can be retrieved by the owner. Drivesafe provides protection, notification of access, and recovery of important data stored on portable drives. Security was accomplished using a symmetrical encryption algorithm and a personal key provided by the user. For ease of use, encryption and decryption can be performed on an individual file or on the drive as a whole. Notification occurs via email upon any failed password attempt. To avoid complications with firewalls and other blocking techniques, Drivesafe sends a secured XML file through port 80 (normally reserved for web browsing) to a server application, which in turn processes and sends the actual notifications. Recovery is accomplished by pushing the contents of the drive to a password protected FTP site, where files can be retrieved virtually anywhere an internet connection can be established. To balance speed and reliability, Drivesafe will first attempt to push files directly to FTP from the location it is being operated. If a connection to the secure site can’t be established, the program will push the contents of the drive to the DriveSafe Server which will then load the files to the FTP site remotely.
