Football is a simple game but with complex relations between variables that should
led us into build up a team.
There are many kinds of “football” and one of the main tasks from any coach is to
define and organize “our football”. There are many aspects that may interfere in
football”
this process but after careful weighing he must “deliver” a collective project of team
deliver”
organization (model of play) that will be the base for all the training process
play)
during the season.
Time will tell us what modifications and evolutions will be necessary to obtain the
optimal equilibrium inside the team. For this we need a plan a plan adapted to
plan,
reality but also a plan that allows us to innovate and that pushes everybody into a
higher level…
…NOT TO PLAN IS THE FIRST STEP TO PLAN FEILURE…
No coach can control all the aspects of the game (there are so many…), so before
coming into the field, he has to know exactly what he wants to see (diagnostic) and
to work (action) during all training session.. Choose his battles carefully and win
them one by one or else he may easily loose the war…
“…to be convicted that good sportive results can grow up from improvisation is to
ignore knowledge and to know failure…”
José Mourinho (2001)

Basic Explanation of “Tactical Periodization”
Methodological Principles
1. Principle of Specificity: All exercises must be “model of play” related.
2. Principle of “dismounting” and hierarchic positioning of game
principles: Identify game parts and start building up “our” game in a logical sequence.
3. Principle of horizontal “sequential training” in specificity: Build
specificity:
up a week training program that allows us to work under all the necessary aspects to achieve
greatness.
progression:
4. Principle of complex progression: Exercises must be created with the necessary
(increasing) complexity to promote an easier understanding of the game principles by the player.
propensities:
5. Principle of propensities: Exercises must promote the constant repetition of certain
events or situations to increase player assimilation of habits.
making:
6. Principle of concentration and decision making: Player must be all the
time “reading” the game, adapting to new stimulus, full mind work out…
discovery”:
7. Principle of “guided discovery”: Player must have the space to “find out” by
themselves the solution to certain problems. Coaches job is not to give the meat, is to teach them
how to hunt…

Places
2. Defensive method of game – zonal pressing defense
method
Aggressive but controlled action in the “center of game” (ball and
surrounding space)
Closing down passing lines surrounding “center of game”
Reduce “playing field space” and positioning of players according to
“middle space rule”
Defensive lines close from each other and moving according to ball
movement
3. Transition from defense to attacking process (fast and/or
supported)
If possible search for “reference player” (striker) and create in max. ¾ touch
a finishing situation or set up for “second ball”
When forwards passing lines are closed play ball thru supporting players,
take the ball away from pressing zone and initiate offensive process

4. Offensive method of game – organized (positional) attack (long
ball
and supportive ball possession)
Good positioning on the field and enlarge “playing field space”
Constant search for free playing spaces with search of numerical superiority
near the ball
Diagonal passing with constant support behind ball line
Frequent change of point of attack
Understanding of mentality in first and second phases of construction:
First phase Simple but constructive playing with good control of positional
phase:
play.
Second phase: Aggressive and taking risks mentality when near opposite
phase
goal.
attack
5. Transition from attack to defensive process (immediate chase,
delay and reorganization)
Closer player(s) to the lost of ball space must immediately react and stop or
at least slow down opposite team attack
Player(s) must “slow down” the game and avoid situations to “fasten up”
the game like failed tackles or failed repositioning.
Replace as fast as possible great number of player behind ball line and
initiate organized defensive process
6. Set pieces – attack and defense
Throw ins, Corners, Free kicks, etc

7. Specific tasks, tactical circulations and strategies
