ABSTRACT
Zodiac signs have been a part of humanity, guiding them through the space as well as providing them
insight into their own characteristics since thousands of years. Certain changes have obviously been made
through the years but it still remains to posses major significance in todays world. There have been certain
rumours about this in past and that has diminished its credibility and importance and so in this research we
will be finding out about its impact on Humans (if any) and also about the role it plays out there in space
charting the path of the sun. In conducting this research we will be using various sources such as previous
researches conducted in this field as well as new information sources from the internet and a survey will also
be conducted in order to know people's views whether their traits match with their respective zodiac or not.

INTRODUCTION
The word “Zodiac” comes from a Greek terminology and it literally means “circle of animals”.
The start of astrology was done by Egyptians who later introduced it to the Babylonians.
They are categorized into sun signs and moon signs. Based on these sun signs and moon signs many
personality traits have been categorized.
Ancient astrologers predict that there is a connection between the sun signs and the moon signs of a
person to his/her personality traits. Many scientific proofs have been determined about these sun signs and
moon signs and even astrologers propose that astrology is related to science.
Since the zodiac signs about thousands of years old, there have been many speculations and debates
about the purpose it serves. Science believes that its sole purpose is to chart the suns movement across the
celestial sphere in a year but our astrologer believe that it also has a major impact on a person’s behaviour
and characteristics. So basically, in this research, we will be trying to know whether these signs really affect
our personalities and if yes then how much? It is already scientifically proven that these signs are the suns
path throughout the year but is it possible for them to serve another purpose affecting us directly or was it
merely the whims of certain ancient people who others followed blindly?
The classical map of the sky, with the 48 Greek constellations, was derived from at least two different
pre-Greek traditions. One tradition comprised the 12 signs of the zodiac, with several associated animal
constellations, all of which developed over 3,200-500 BC in Mesopotamia in a religious or ritual tradition.
These were taken over by the Greeks around 500 BC. However, the other Babylonian constellations, their
farming-calendar tradition, were not adopted. The other tradition was not Mesopotamian; it comprised
large constellations which appear to date from 2,800 BC, probably from the Mediterranean region, devised
for the navigators of ships. They include huge bears and serpents which marked the celestial pole and
equator at that time, and probably the four anonymous giants which we know as Hercules, Ophiuchus,
Bootes, and Auriga, as well as some of the large southern 'marine' constellations. The origins of some
other constellations, including the Perseus tableau and various animals, are unknown. It is therefore
6. ZODIAC SIGNS 5
currently concluded that among the Indo-European peoples, astrology dates to the third millennium
BC. This is supported by the following research.
'There has been much speculation as to the origin of the constellations. Until recently it has usually been
assumed that they evolved from the fancies of primitive imaginations, but research now suggests that they
were designed as a pictorial scientific coordinate system. A coordinate system is a set of imaginary lines for
measuring positions, like the lines of latitude and longitude for determining locations on the earth. The
constellations perform a similar function, but they employ pictures, which make it easy to identify stars
without need of instruments. Moreover, this evidence points to a time and place that they originated: about
2700 B.C at about 36° north latitude. There are three main lines of evidence that point to this date and
location'.
The Empty Part of the sky. There is a circle of about 36° radius in the southern part of the sky which does
not contain any of the original 48 constellations. That implies that the originators of the constellations lived
at about 36° north latitude because at that location, exactly such an area of southern sky would be invisible
to them. Moreover, the centre of that circle moves very slowly through the sky because of the motion of the
earth's axis. The location of the centre of the empty part of the sky implies an origin date of about 2,900
B.C.
Slanted Constellations. Many of the constellations are tipped at an angle to the natural directions of north,
east, south and west. If one asks if there was a time and place when they would have all been much aligned
vertically and horizontally, the answer is, about 2,900 B.C. Note that this is an entirely different line of
reasoning, but it yields a very similar date and location of origin. Moreover, several of the constellations
mark astronomically important areas at the date. For example, the long snake Hydra would have coincided
with the circle called the celestial equator.
Star risings and settings. The ancient Greek poet Aratus states that certain stars rise at the same time, or set
at the same time, or that one rises as another sets on opposite points on the horizon. Because of the earth's
precession, such coincidences depend on both the location on the earth and on the date of observations.
Using statistical methods, it has been found that Aratuswas describing the stars at a latitude of about 36°
(within about 2°) at about 2,600 B.C. (within 800 years).

The Armenian Zodiac:
While it is traditionally claimed that the earliest reference to the zodiac originates with the
Babylonians, the discovery of an observatory in Metsamor, Armenia, predating the Babylonian kingdom by
almost 2,000 years has changed our perception of events as the observatory at Metsamor apparently contains
the first recorded example of dividing the year into 12 sections. Using an early form of geometry, the
inhabitants of Metsamor were able to create both a calendar and envision the curve of the earth.
The discovery of the astronomical 'observatory' at Metsamor and the presence of engravings which
have been speculatively called 'zodiac creatures' has given credence to the assertion that the ancient figures
of the constellations were probably created by ancient peoples living in the Euphrates valley and near Mount
Ararat in eastern Anatolia and Armenia: Rick Ney, the author of 'Karahundj, The Armenian Stonehenge',
says of it:
The Hindu Zodiac:
The names of the Hindu zodiac and corresponding Greek
signs sound very different, being in Sanskrit and Greek
respectively, but it has been long recognised that their
symbols are identical. For example, dhanu means "bow"
and corresponds to Sagittarius, the "archer", and kumbha
means "water-pitcher" and corresponds to Aquarius, the
"water-carrier". The correspondence of signs is taken to
suggest the possibility of early interchange of cultural
influences, but while it is generally assumed that the
similarity between the symbols in both systems is because
of a Greek presence c. 50 BC, but it is contended this is
supposition, and that there is clear evidence of trading
between the Sumerian and Babylonian cultures and the
8. ZODIAC SIGNS 7
Indus Valley Culture millennia before the Greeks were ever in Asia, and the Sumerians have a record of
Astrological symbols that dated back to c. 2,000 BC. B. G.
Siddhartha points out that there are several references to the zodiac in the Rig Veda and
Mahabharata, both of which are ancient texts which predate any Greek influence in Asia.
The Chinese Zodiac:
The Chinese animal zodiac, or sheng Xiao in pinyin
(literally translated as "born resembling"), is (rather
interestingly) a rotating cycle of 12 years, with each year being
represented by an animal and its reputed attributes.
Scientifically speaking, the "Chinese Zodiac" could be said of
as a way of dividing the "Jupiter Year" because it takes 12
years for Jupiter to complete one orbit the sun. The Chinese
calendar counts years in cycles of sixty years. Each year has a
label consisting of two parts. The first component is the
celestial stem being one of the five elements. The second
component is the terrestrial branch being one of the twelve
animal (zodiac) signs. The equation becomes five multiplied by twelve equalling sixty, or one cycle in the
Chinese calendar.
The legend of the origin of the Chinese zodiac says that Buddha (other versions say the Jade
Emperor of Heaven) once invited all the animals to a race; the first twelve would be included in the Zodiac
calendar.
Purpose
Zodiac signs were invented thousands of years ago and still it has a lot of significance in today’s
world. Many personality traits had been categorised based on sun sign and moon sign. The purpose of this
detailed research is to simplify how this zodiac signs affects the human life and is there a relation between
these signs and the personality gained by the humans. Many ancient astrologers had predicted that there is a
connection between the signs and personality and these signs had been evolved from the stars in our
9. ZODIAC SIGNS 8
universe. Also, different astrologers work and study on different things. Some astrologers study on stars and
constellations and on the other side western astrologers works on sun, moon and solar systems.
Many scientific proofs had been determined about the zodiac signs and some astrologers proposed
that astrology is related to science. It uses scientific knowledge about heavenly bodies, as well as scientific
sounding tools, like star charts. Some people use astrology to generate expectations about future events and
people's personalities, much as scientific ideas generate expectations. And some claim that astrology is
supported by evidence — the experiences of people who feel that astrology has worked for them.
Terms
Sun signand moon sign:
Did you know that even zodiac signs are divided further into two signs which are called sun sign and
moon sign? Each person has their two different signs. Sun at the time of one’s birth will be positioned in one
of the 12 zodiac signs and the sign where the Sun was positioned becomes the person’s Sun Sign and the
moon is the zodiac sign in one’s horoscope where Moon was in transit during birth.
The sun sign is based on the date of birth. It can be easily derived by matching one’s date of birth
with the fixed pattern of Sun’s movement.
The moon sign is based on date, place and time of birth taken together and it can be derived by using
astrological calculation.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
1.Name of research paper:The relationship between zodiac signs and the personality of an individual.
Abstract:
Personality is defined as an individual’s unique and relatively enduring pattern of thoughts, feelings and
actions. Every individual has a unique personality because we all have unique brains and unique DNA
strands which makes us totally different from one another. On the other hand, there is an ancient study that
goes way back in history and still exists until now. It is about the positions and aspects of celestial bodies in
the belief that they have an influence on the course of natural earthly occurrences and human affairs. That
study is called astrology. Horoscope is also closely related to astrology. It is a diagram of the heavens,
showing the relative position of planets and the signs of the zodiac, for use in calculating births and
grouping them according to the date of each ones births. Horoscopes also foretell each groups personality
traits, and can even predict what would happen in their daily lives.
The goal of this research is to determine if psychology and astrology has a significant relationship especially
in the aspect of the personality of the human mind.
13. ZODIAC SIGNS 12
2.Name of ResearchPaper: Astrological Signs And Personality Differences
Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between astrological signs and personality traits in 65 268 South
African jobseekers (mean age = 24.8 years, females = 59%, Blacks = 98%). Participants completed the
Basic Traits inventory (Taylor and de Bruin, 2006). Contrastive analysis of personality traits by astrological
signs yielded no significant differences. Until the twentieth century astrologers considered that the stars
played a main role in defining human behavior, but con-temporary psychological astrologers also emphasize
the role of Jungian archetypes and psychological structures underlying different personalities (Kelly, 1997).
Astrology claims to explain typical characteristics of people born at certain times of' the year, and how
people who are born at different times differ from each other or could complement each other (see
MacGregor, 2011; Sterling, 2010; Riske, 2011). In the social media, it is quite common to find sections
dedicated to zodiac-related statements and predictions. Some skepticism exists, however, among researchers
about the scientific credibility of astrological writings (see Chico & Lorenzo-. Empirical research generally
shows little support for astrology claims. Eysenck and Nias (1982), for example, state that behavior can
usually be explained better by non-astrological predictors. Nonetheless, many people still read astrological
descriptions and predictions in the social media, and may also make decisions based thereupon.

3.Name of ResearchPaper: Astrological Planetary Alignment and Personality Differences: Saving us
from Ignorance.
Abstract:
Astrological information often appears in newspapers and magazines. This suggests that there are readers
who may believe that their birthdates relate to astrology and that this phenomenon influences their everyday
lives. Many scientists, particularly psychologists, have attempted to link astrological signs with personality
traits on an empirical level. Scientific evidence generally indicates that zodiac star positions do not influence
different personalities. The study of planetary alignment, however, seems more complex. Results in this
field often involve smaller research groups, are more difficult to interpret, and can therefore be considered as
ambivalent. In this specific study a large group of 65 268 job seekers was assessed by means of a personality
questionnaire, the so-called Basic Traits Inventory. The personality traits of four groups of individuals (N =
49, N = 48, N = 39, N = 36) were compared. The groups differed from each other in that all the members of
a specific group shared the same planetary alignment and zodiac sign. Chronological age, as a mediator, was
not taken into account as the individuals were all born in the same year (1983). No significant differences in
personality traits between the groups were found. The results of this study confirm that neither zodiac star
signs, nor planetary alignments, influence personality. This affirms, through scientific investigation, that
astrology should be seen for what it is; namely an outmoded, archaic belief system based on mythological
assumptions.

4. Name of ResearchPaper: An Empirical Study of the Relation between Astrological Factors and
Personality
Abstract:
This study reports a test of an astrological prediction according to which extraversion is related to being
born under the odd numbered zodiacal signs, and introversion to being born under the even numbered zodiac
signs. Also tested is the hypothesis of greater emotionality for people born under the so-called water signs.
Nine hundred seventeen male adults and 1407 female adults were administered the Eysenck Personality
Inventory, and their birthdates ascertained. Results for males and females separately and jointly support the
predictions made on the basis of astrological writings at a high level of significance. Possible causes for this
finding are discussed, but it is concluded that artifacts are unlikely to have produced the results obtained.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Objective:
To determine whether zodiac signs are accurate in defining the personalities of certain individuals.
To determine whether zodiac and horoscope are really connected or related to us humans especially to our
psychological personality traits.
To determine what are zodiac signs actually based on and what purpose it serves? it astronomy or astrology
or is it just some random shapes in space that ancient humans mistook as something significant
Rationale:
In our daily lives, people don’t like walking in the dark or going through life without an idea about what’s
going to happen next. Whether it is curiosity, or just plain dependency, people still seek for guidance in
wherever they could find it. To some people, this is where horoscopes and astrology come in. Astrology and
Horoscope define our personal characteristics and our traits through the position of the celestial bodies on
the date that we were born. Astrologers believe that the positions of the celestial bodies on the day that we
were born have a certain connection to us people here on earth. They also believe that they can foretell what
is going to happen in our daily lives. These are interesting thoughts and it could also possibly be helpful for
us but the question is, are these information fact or fiction?
This research will help in determining whether astrology and horoscope are actually connected or related to
us humans especially to our psychological personality traits. It’ll also shed light on the exact purpose that
Zodiac Signs serve.

Sample:
For the sample, we collected data from the age group of 18-23 years old students in the form of google
forms and questionnaire for one major part of the research.
Tool:
For one part of the research regarding knowing if the persons traits match with that of his Sun signs, we used
a survey method in which we gave out questionnaires to different people with questions that allowed us to
know about peoples reviews in a self-introspection way. That data was analysed and can be shown along
with the Results and Findings. The rest of the data about zodiac was collected from the internet.

CONCLUSION
Although zodiac signs or astrology is not a religion, it offers comfort, faith and a deeper understanding of
the world we live in. Interpretations often offer assurances of one's future, but more importantly, they are
supposed to show us a way to resolve our issues and to improve our relationships with our partners, family,
and friends and mainly tools to meet ourselves and discover our own inner worlds in a different light.
Astrology claims that nothing in life is coincidental and everything that happens to us happens for a
particular reason. Astrology can provide us some good answers as to why these things happen to us and it
guides us on our steps forward. In this way, astrology actually helps people to understand themselves and
the world around them much better.
Astrology works, astrologers don’t. Most of the people who visit astrologers or read their horoscopes
regularly, end up with a sensation of fulfillment and satisfaction somewhat like euphoria. This does not
mean that the astrologers have accurately predicted the individual’s future or present based on their
horoscope dates, but it means that having a horoscope cast can be actually a very fulfilling experience.
According to our study that we have done, a high number of people read horoscope columns or follow their
astrological signs just for fun. But during the survey that we did, we also found many people who diligently
follow their horoscopes and believe in their astrology signs meanings.
Astrology can be a real lifesaver because it lets you know of the future obstacles and problems in advance. It
is up to you whether you want to believe the advice and precautions suggested in a horoscope reading and
save yourself from the pain without doing much.
Some people believe in astrology because others before them did and curiosity is a basic human nature, but
the further drawn into astrology the more clear things become. The zodiac dates, the signs. We can associate
zodiac signs to almost all aspects of our lives and we will see they are truly insightful and correct. An
important aspect in that being true is that how strongly you believe in your zodiac sign or horoscope such
that you would strive towards making a better personality according to your zodiac sign and horoscope.
Everyone has to put up a strong effort to change things in their lives.
