Zebra mussels were first found in Texas waters in 2006 and have since been discovered in several lakes and rivers. In 2012, new regulations were passed requiring boats to drain all water before leaving lakes in the Red River basin and certain areas of the Trinity River due to findings of zebra mussels. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has been monitoring waters across the state, educating the public through awareness campaigns using various media, and working with local authorities to prevent the spread of zebra mussels.
