This document summarizes a project aimed at developing a compact laser diode module for locally heating ultra high strength steel during forming to improve the forming process. The project involved an SME manufacturer of laser diodes, Monocrom, partnering with other organizations to develop a customized laser diode package for industrial materials processing. Through the I4MS program, Monocrom received support in the form of matching their technology to customer needs, accelerating product development, and testing a prototype which reduced risks for both the customer and supplier. Going forward, Monocrom plans to further develop the integrated laser diode package and enter the market, creating new jobs and sales.

The document describes a reconfigurable robot workcell that aims to reduce setup times for automated assembly processes in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The workcell builds upon technologies from previous projects to be autonomous, low cost, and able to nearly automatically reconfigure for new assembly tasks. It will be implemented and tested on three use cases from different SMEs. The goals are to demonstrate innovation in assembly processes currently done manually and potential industrial impact. Metrics for reduced setup times are provided for comparison to current manual assembly processes commonly used by SMEs.

After completing the initial year, I4MS has hosted its first public international event on 18th June in Berlin, in cooperation with the launch of the German manufacturing programme, Autonomik für Industrie 4.0". I4MS has brought together more than 150 professionals from industry and innovation, who have attended to several presentations about what has been achieved by I4MS and further funding opportunities for SMEs and middle size corporates (mid-caps) under the Initiative.
The event signified the importance of SMEs in Europes manufacturing industry and their role in the reindustrialisation process for Europe. At a glance: SMEs are providers of around 45% of manufacturing added value and roughly 59% of employment in the manufacturing sector.

This document summarizes a project using cloud-based computing to design hydraulic turbines. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the hydro power sector aimed to increase renewable energy use and their global market share using a new, more affordable turbine layout. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was needed to customize turbine designs but was prohibitively expensive for SMEs. The Fortissimo project provided pay-per-use access to high-performance computing resources in the cloud, allowing an SME called ZECO to reduce simulation and development time by 75-50% and lower costs by 24%. This enabled ZECO to gain a competitive edge in global markets.
This document contains illustrations and explanations of science models done by a student named Iman Ali Liaqat for their class 8G2 subject teacher Ms. Binu. It includes diagrams and explanations of particles in mixtures, how sugar crystals form as a solution cools, density and weight calculations, how boiling point increases with added salt, and diagrams demonstrating how greater pressure is exerted with less surface area as seen in examples of thin tires versus fat tires and sharp edges of forks and knives versus blunt edges.

The document discusses using high-performance computing (HPC) for drug-target binding simulations. It describes how HPC resources from the Fortissimo project enable performing over 450 million pairwise molecule-ligand comparisons, allowing for novel drug target prediction, side effect prediction, and drug repositioning. Two universities implemented and optimized distributed algorithms to run the drug binding simulations on HPC infrastructure 5-10 times faster. This provides a framework for previously impossible bioinformatics analyses to discover new drugs.
Ultrafast lasers can help address challenges in the solar industry. Through the I4MS project, a picosecond fiber laser was customized for scribing thin film copper indium gallium selenide solar cells. Testing the laser in a scribing machine at Bern University of Applied Sciences allowed validating the process. This is expected to standardize laser scribing, lower solar cell production costs, and increase Onefive's market share in solar. The global solar market is projected to grow significantly by 2019, providing an opportunity for increased sales and revenue for Onefive.

I4MS 2015: Enhancing digital transformation in manufacturing SMEs
I4MS 2015 will explore the progress achieved by the I4MS initiative and the impact participation has had on SMEs.
To date I4MS has achieved over 80% industrial participation. An initial participation of 80 SMEs has now grown to 150 as momentum continues to build. Success is also evident with SME participation in projects leading to the adaption of new technologies and approaches. I4MS phase two will take this success further through additional projects supported by a budget of approximately EUR 35 Mn.
At I4MS 2015 participating SMEs will present their experiences, results achieved and impact made. They will explain how they have benefited and what the adaption of innovative ICT has meant for their business. European support does not just exist at EU level.
Action at regional level supported through programmes such as Smart Specialisation present the good opportunity to reach out to and involve the diverse landscape of European SMEs. At I4MS 2015 participants will be introduced to a new activity designed for such outreach – digital innovation competence centres – and an outlook towards the next stage of I4MS.
I4MS is a EUR 77 Mn initiative of the 'Factories of the Future' partnership designed to support the adaption of innovative ICT by SMEs. Through seven integrated projects in four key areas, I4MS brings manufacturing SMEs directly into research and innovation projects, introducing them to innovative technologies and supporting the adoption of such technologies.

This document discusses waist circumference (WC) as a measure of abdominal fat and cardiometabolic risk. It finds that WC is a reliable surrogate for abdominal fat mass and strongly associated with health risks like diabetes and heart disease. The consensus panel addressed four questions: 1) WC measures abdominal girth and estimates abdominal fat levels. 2) Excess abdominal fat increases cardiometabolic risk through mechanisms like insulin resistance. 3) WC predicts health outcomes comparably or better than BMI and provides additional predictive value when used with BMI. 4) WC should be regularly measured in clinical practice to assess cardiometabolic risk and weight management efforts.
The document discusses a project called INTEFIX that developed an intelligent milling chuck to address issues with milling thin-walled workpieces. The chuck uses a complex sensor system and integrated actuators to provide counter-excitation that reduces vibrations during milling. INVENT, an SME technology provider, developed piezo-based sensors integrated into composite plates, including a TRIAX sensor plate used in the intelligent chuck. The project helped establish new market and collaboration opportunities for INVENT in developing customized sensor systems, and allowed GIGGLE to improve productivity and portfolio through reduced machining times and higher quality products enabled by the vibration-reducing chuck.
LASHARE is the acronym of a European project involving more than 30 SMEs from across Europe, partners from industry and six of the most renowned laser research institutes. Main objective is to share knowledge on laser based equipment and its use addressing the whole value chain end to end. As a key success factor for European manufacturing the transfer of innovative solutions from the laboratory into industrially robust products and the dissemination of its use stands at the heart of the project.
Race to the Top was established in July 2009 by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act under President Obama. It aims to spur education reform through competitive grants to states. Some groups opposed it like conservatives and teachers' unions. It remains controversial due to ongoing modifications and a focus on early education. The Department of Education oversees the $4.35 billion program, which is more than initially expected. States apply for phase 1 grants to fund reforms to improve student achievement and competitiveness.
1) The document is a chemistry project submitted by Iman Ali about reducing CO2 emissions from power generation through renewable and CO2-free technologies.
2) It discusses that while CO2 is important for plant growth, increased CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion are contributing to global warming.
3) The project then outlines various renewable energy sources like solar, hydro, wind, geothermal, and biomass that can help reduce CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuel power generation.
