Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

1. Issei a Nisei v Severní Americe
Argumentace
Toto téma jsem si zvolil z důvodu mého zájmu o Japonsko, Japonskou kultůru a jeho historii. Toto
téma se vztahuje k mému studiu svým umistěním převážně v U.S.A. a také svým vlivem na Japonské
obyvatele Ameriky a jejich kořeny. Nadpis jsem volil tak aby řekl vše a zároven nic nezasvěcenému
člověku.
2. Issei
Issei je Japonské slovní spojení používané ve státech Severní Ameriky, Jižní Ameriky a Australie
k určení prvních přistěhovalců narozených v Japonsku a přichazejících z Japonska.Doslova znamená
„první generace“. Toto slovní spojení se začalo prosazovat v třicátých letech dvacátého století. Uplně
nahradilo dřívější termín kterým byli označováni. Původní termín byl „Imigrant“ (ijusha). Tento nový
termín vyobrazoval změnu v jejich pohledu na sebe samé a také představoval myšlenku nového
počátku, jejich psychologické transformace týkající se nového bydliště, jejich významné komunity a
také myšlenky ,že patři do jiné nové země.
Z důvodů usídlení v uzkých etnických skupinách se první generace neměla možnost naučit mluvit
anglicky. Spoléhali se hlavně na noviny,televizi a filmy v jejich rodné řeči. V určitém smyslu o sobě
smýšleli více jako o Japoncích než Američanech nebo Kanaďanech.
Emigrace z Japonska
Japonsko byla po dvě století uzavřená země ,od roku 1636 do roku 1853, protože vojenský vůdce
z vladnoucího rodu Tokugawa chtěl udržet cizince od Japonské společnosti. Jediné vyjímky byli
občané Číny a někteří občané Nizozemska, i přesto byly odrazováni od sdružování se s Japonskými
občany. Také bylo zákonem zakázáno jakékoli cestovaní mimo zemi. Změna přišla počátkem
devatenáctého století po návštěvě Amerického velitele flotily Commodora Perryho. Tato návštěva
přiměla novou Japonskou vládu k nahrazení Tokugawova systému z důvodů otevření obchodu a
získaní kontaktu v vnějším světem. Po roce 1866, se Japonská vláda rozhodne k vyslání studentů a
kvalifikovaných pracovníků do U.S.A z důvodů získaní nového vedění a zkušeností nezbytných pro
růst země. V roce 1884, bylo povoleno dělnické třídě emigrovat. A první lidé „první generace“ začínají
přicházet do Severní a Jižní Ameriky. Okolo roku 1915, byli Japonští muži kteří našetřili 800 dolarů
považováni za způsobilé nechat si přivést manželky z Japonska.
Imigrace do Ameriky
Jenom pár Japoncu odcestovalo do Ameriky s cílem se zde usídlit,většina pouze plánovala získaní
zkušeností a nějakého výdělku před svým návratem do Japonska. Tyto skupiny pracovníků se
převážně skládaly z mužů. Díky zakázu imigrace Čínanu z roku 1882 byli Japonci vyhlédávani jako
levná pracovní síla do zemědělství,těžařství,stavby železnic a továren kde měli nahradit klesající počty
Čínanů. Roku 1907, díky dohodě mezi Americkou a Japonskou vládou zvanou „Gentlemen's
Agreement“ ukončila imigraci Japonských pracovníků na uzemí U.S.A ,avšak povolila imigraci
manželek Japonských přistěhovalců již žijících na jejich uzemí. Dohoda z roku 1924 však zakázala
jakoukoli imigraci z Japonska až na pár vyjímek.
„První generace“ pocházela z Japonska ale byli v Americe ze své vlastní volby a vytvořili si zde své
nové domovy. Kdyby jim nebylo zakázáno stát se občany mnozí znich by se jimi stali. V roce 1913,
vešel v platnost zákon zakazující komukoli kdo nebyl občan vlastnit pozemky. Tento zákon zahrnoval
také první generaci a proto mnozí na zákon reagovali převedením vlastnictví pozemků na své děti.
Nisei
Nisei je Japonské slovní spojení používané ve státech Severní Ameriky, Jižní Ameriky a Australie
k určení dětí prvních japonských přistěhovalců na jejich uzemích. Nisei doslova znamená „druhá
3. generace“. Druhá generace odolávala tomu aby byla pohlcena do vetšinové společnosti. Hlavně díky
jejich tendenci si zachovat Japonský pohled na věc. Hlavní bod jejich stylu chování bylo jejich
vyjádření subjektivního já a tuto kontrolu emocí předali i svým dětem. Většina znich docházela na
Americké nebo Kanadské školy kde byli učení zapadní hodnoty individualizmu a občanství. Proto když
jim tyto hodnoty byly počátkem čtyřicátých let uzmuty se setkavali s velkými obtížemi při příjmání
internace a nuceného přestěhování.
Segregace a internace Japonců
Z duvodů utoku na Pearl Harbor a vyhlašení války japonsku se zvedla vlna nedůvěry proti Japoncům.
Japonsko-Americká internace bylo přesídlení a internace Japonců vládou Spojených státu Amerických
v roce 1942. Okolo 110 tisíc Japonců žijících na Zapadním pobřeží bylo přesunuto do takzvaných
valečných přesídlovacích kempů. Toto přesídlení bylo umožněno prezidentem F.D.Rooseveltem
vydáním Výkonným nařízením 9066 dne 19. Února 1942. Toto nařízení umožnovalo vojenským
velitelům vytvořit vojenské zóny odkud mohla být jakákoli osoba vyloučena. Tato moc byla použita
k vyhlašení ,že všichní lidé s Japonskými kořeny budou vyloučeni z celé oblasti na pobřeží pacifiku.
Nebyly kladeny rozdíly mezi první a druhou generací, všichni bez rozdílů byli odvedeni do
internačních táborů.FBI asistovala snahy internace poskytovaním informací na Japonské občany. 2.
Ledna 1945 bylo toto nařízení zrušeno a obyvatele internačních táboru se mohli začít vracet do svých
domovů. Na cestu dostali lístek do svého domovského města a 25 dolarů. Velká část Japonců se
rozhodla emigrovat zpět do Japonska.
Roku 1988, Prezident Ronald Reagan podevpsal „Akt občanských svobod roku 1988“ který poskytl
formální omluvu a platbu 20 tisíc dolarů každému přeživšímu internačních táborů. Legislatíva
prohlásila ,že tyto akce byly postaveny na rasové předpojatosti, válečné hysterii a selhání politického
vedení. Celkově bylo vyplaceno více než 1,2 miliardy dolarů. „Akt občanských svobod roku 1988“
