A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Thank you Ron for that introduction Good afternoon everyone. I am here today to talk to you about Rotary Club Central . We know that Rotary clubs do GREAT things. Rotarians give generously to our strong foundation. Clubs do service projects in their local communities and in countries around the world. New Rotary clubs, Interact clubs, and Rotaract clubs are started every week of the year. Members are engaged in promoting Rotary to younger , new generations and more diverse professions. Clubs work HARD to promote all of these activities and more through public relations efforts . We want to support these activities and encourage clubs, and believe that Rotary Club Central is the online tool to do this. It will highlight club activities in order to help clubs increase Rotary’s global impact, because if we are to realize the goals of the RI strategic plan , we need to know what we are doing.

We want to support these activities and encourage clubs, and believe that Rotary Club Central is the online tool to do this. It will highlight club activities in order to help clubs increase Rotary’s global impact, because if we are to realize the goals of the RI strategic plan , we need to know what we are doing.
Rotary Club Central will help clubs: Analyze their current state Set goals for the coming year Create a plan to achieve their goals And monitor their progress toward their goals Slated to launch the end of July, this tool will be accessible to all Rotarians through Member Access on rotary.org. Eventually, it will replace three goal setting forms: the Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Clubs, the Foundation Fund Development Goal Report Form, and the Membership Development Goal Form. Each user of the tool will land in the Club View of their personal club record. From this view, you can see that goals will be set and tracked in three areas: Your Club, Service, and Foundation Giving . At the top of each tab you will see a Trends graph highlighting one particular goal from the tab. In this example, we are highlighting the Annual Fund trend on the Foundation Giving tab. This trend graphic shows five years of history for this club’s goals and actual giving to the Annual Fund of The Rotary Foundation. For the tab, Your Club, we will show you the five year membership trends and for the tab, Service, we will show your club’s trends for service projects . Some of this data will be readily available when we launch in July, while other data will be brought in as users of the tool report their activities. This page is viewable by all members of a club, and allows everyone in the club to know the goals and be accountable for reaching them. We hope that by empowering clubs with the ability to quickly assess their performance, Rotarians will be motivated to challenge themselves , their clubs , and their districts to greater heights of achievement, enhancing Rotary’s area of impact.
For each goal, club leaders will be able to use a Goal setting table to build a meaningful goal, such as this one for member retention. In this example , clubs leaders will need to consider: how many of their current members they wish to retain , how many new members they plan to recruit , and of those how many they will retain . This calculation will result in a more realistic member goal for the end of their year of service. This means that club leaders reported to RI who have accounts in Member Access are the ones who will be able to set and edit goals for the club. For those clubs with limited internet access , we encourage them to reach out to their district leaders who can enter the clubs’ goals and monitor progress on their behalf. If a goal is entered by a district leader, all club leaders with email addresses in the RI membership database will receive an email notification alerting them of this change.
Rotary Club Central will also include resources to help clubs achieve their goals. Resources might include publications , social media sites, experts , or even webinars . Here you see the Resources for Your Club.
In order to allow district leaders to support clubs , Rotary Club Central will include a district summary view. This will list the cumulative total and progress for clubs in the district.
as well as a listing of each club’s goal and progress for the coming year. This will allow districts to easily identify which clubs need more support and which clubs are able to surpass their goals and should share their strategies with others .
And in order to offer clubs the most support in analyzing their past activity and setting challenging goals, for the first time ever , Rotary International now allows district governors, district governors-elect, and executive district secretaries , to report which Rotarians in their district are assistant governors through Member Access. Starting 1 July , assistant governors will have access to the data online in Member Access.
