Reggaeton originated as Spanish reggae in Panama in the late 1970s. It evolved and gained prominence in Puerto Rico, where artists blended Jamaican reggae with Spanish lyrics. Reggaeton spread through Latin American communities in the Caribbean and U.S. cities. Puerto Rican rapper Vico C released Spanish hip hop records in the 1980s that helped spread the early reggaeton sound by mixing reggae and hip hop.
