Reggaeton originated in Panama where Jamaican music blended with Latin styles as Jamaicans migrated to Panama in the early 20th century to work on the Panama Canal. While many assume reggaeton began in Puerto Rico due to its popularity there, the genre was born from the musical fusion that occurred when Jamaican immigrants incorporated their reggae sounds into Latin music in Panama. Don Omar and Daddy Yankee are two highly successful Puerto Rican reggaeton artists who helped popularize the genre internationally.
