Mrs. Moran, a first grade teacher, is concerned about one of her students, Tyrel, a six-year-old African American boy. She has concerns about his academic achievement, as he is struggling with reading assignments. She also notes that he sometimes withdraws and other times acts aggressively for no clear reason. When trying to arrange a parent-teacher conference, Tyrel's mother confirmed they were being evicted and would be moving to a homeless shelter, so she was unsure if Tyrel would be in school for a few weeks. Tyrel also told the teacher that his parents did not respond to notes about the conference because they were embarrassed about the eviction and his mother could not read.
