This document discusses the importance of developing global competence in students. It defines global competence as having the ability to understand and address issues of global significance. The document outlines four domains of global competence: investigating the world beyond one's environment, recognizing different perspectives, communicating ideas to diverse audiences, and taking action to address real-world problems. It provides examples of project-based learning approaches like SAGE that can help develop these skills and allow students more choice, authentic work, opportunities to address issues with global relevance, and present their learning to audiences. The goal is to help students develop the skills, knowledge, and mindsets needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

State of the World's Children 2012 - Children in an Urban WorldUNICEF Publications
This report anticipates the rapidly approaching day when the majority of the world’s children will grow up in urban areas. It observes that many of these places are marked by pronounced inequality in power and resources that in turn lead to disparity in children’s survival and development.
The report adds to the growing base of evidence and analysis of inequity and the need for strategies to reach excluded children and families wherever they live. It builds on work, by UNICEF and many partners, to show that the children who are most deprived, vulnerable and difficult to reach are to be found not only in remote rural parts but also in the very urban centres that are home to commercial, political and cultural elites.
The summary provides an overview of the TEDxBaltimore 2014 conference:
1) The TEDxBaltimore 2014 conference was held at the Murphy Fine Arts Center at Morgan State University with over 20 speakers and performers spanning various disciplines and locations.
2) Two new projects were unveiled - Project CASL, which aims to provide sign language interpretation for deaf attendees, and Project Calliope, a drone technology incubator.
3) Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, praising the organization, speakers, and themes of the conference. The majority of survey respondents said they would attend another TEDx event.

Today’s young people have unprecedented access to powerful tools designed for creative production. Yet, students are often being asked to unplug rather than meaningfully connect with technology. This session explores a virtual playground designed to get teachers and students plugged into new outlets for promoting creative productive giftedness.
Today’s youth lead online lifestyles. They interact in online communities, build relationships, express themselves, stay informed, and find answers to life’s questions all online. Notebook PCs, smartphones, and wireless networks provide access to social networks anywhere, anytime. This generation, the iGeneration, is accustomed to on-demand, individualized service, and is becoming increasingly intolerant of traditional teaching methods where lectures and textbooks assume that “one size fits all” and that learning takes place through individual effort in a classroom. As teachers struggle to satisfy tech-savvy students, we also face pressure to serve increasing numbers of students with fewer resources. Some schools are finding success in dealing with these issues through innovative uses of technologies. Moving curricula online, adopting online pedagogies that emphasize exploration and collaboration, designing engaging activities such as “serious games,” and implementing online learning communities are key to connecting with the iGeneration. This presentation looks at current research in innovative online education technologies, along with the presenter’s own work in the area.
Rolling Role Roundtable - Research and Reflections from The Water Reckoning P...Sue Davis
The Water Reckoning project was initiated to involve young people, teachers and academics in a creative project which drew on Dorothy Heathcote’s philosophy and strategies. Together the groups have co-constructed a story that responds to a common pre-text. Educational and research sites have been involved from Australia, Greece, Singapore, the USA and the UK. This project has focused on exploring ideas that relate to the UN Year of Water Cooperation in keeping with Heathcote’s concern for using drama to raise awareness about human understanding and experience. For her drama had to be about things ‘that mattered’. Our drama has explored how humans cooperate to share and manage water and deal with situations such as drought or extreme weather events. Research has explored the nature of learnings and understandings that have emerged for participants from the process, including cross-cultural awareness and attitudes towards sustainability issues.

This document discusses how to increase employee engagement in the workplace. It introduces the T.H.A.N.K. framework, which stands for Trust, Help, Applaud, Navigate, and Know. Each letter provides strategies for managers to build trust with employees, help them grow, applaud their work, help them balance work and personal life, and get to know them as individuals. Research cited finds that engaged employees are safer, more productive, and less likely to leave their jobs. The document encourages expressing gratitude to improve employee satisfaction and engagement.
It's unfortunate, but in many cases creating a culture of appreciation in the workplace does require a culture change. Today, we are going to explore how harnessing the power of gratitude in both our business and our life can make a significant difference in our perspective, in our health, in all of our relationships, and in our personal and business prosperity.
What exactly is gratitude? According to an article written by Dr. Oz, gratitude has five major attributes. First of all, gratitude is an emotion. True gratitude is not a casual uttering of the word "thanks," it is a heartfelt feeling that one experiences in appreciation of something or someone.
Second, gratitude is in the details. More than expressing, "Thanks for your help," appreciation goes deeper. Remember, what gets recognized gets repeated. In more specific you can be in your expressions of gratefulness, the better the chances that those actions will be repeated.
Third, gratitude is not an IOU. It is always better to thank them and be thanked. When someone does say, "Thank you" to you, always make sure to say, "You are welcome." When someone says, "Thank you," they are giving you a gift. By uttering phrases such as, "No problem", "It was nothing", "No worries," etc., you are taking the present bestowed upon you and throwing it back in their face.
Fourth, gratitude needs to be a consistent practice. Think of gratitude as a muscle. When you incorporate appreciation into your life, even for just a few minutes a day, your gratitude muscle will begin to strengthen.
Why would you need a hefty gratitude muscle? Because, according to Dr. Oz, the fifth attribute of gratitude is that it is not for wimps. It's very easy to be grateful when everything is going well. You just received a new job, you have met the love of your life, you are in the flow. It's not so easy to find gratefulness in times of distress.
Today, we are going to explore gracious living from four areas. We will start with the Self and how a practice of appreciation changes our perspective and outlook on life. We will then move on to Health. What physical benefits does a practice of thankfulness have? You will also learn a few exercises that you can use any time you are not emotionally feeling at your best. Relationships with others is next. This pertains not only to friends and family, but to colleagues, bosses, and customers as well. And lastly, we will explore the impact of gratitude on our well. This includes both personal prosperity as well as business success.

16. Your 2013 Welcome to the United Nations!
'What could be a better message of hope and inspiration than the fact that young
people are acknowledged by the UN as full partners in designing, implementing, and
evaluating the policies and programmes affecting their lives? I was once sitting in the
same setting as you, not sure if I could really influence policies. The Secretary-General
and the UN send a clear message with my appointment that all youth can contribute
and nothing for youth should be done without youth involvement.” – Ahmad
Alhindawi, Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Youth, UN, Jan 2013
"Participation in public decision-making is usually limited to exercising the right to
vote. Your participation in the Youth Assembly indicates otherwise. Your presence here
at the UN indicates that you have taken an interest in participating in some way in
making the world we share a better place for all.
"We hope you will be inspired by the example of Ahmad Alhindawi who just a short
time ago was participating in this Assembly and wondering whether he would ever have
an opportunity to influence politics. You (too) can make important contributions” –
Maher Nasser, Director of Outreach, Department of Public Information, UN, Jan 2013
