Trench warfare was commonly used in World War I. The German army began using flamethrowers to flush out enemy soldiers from trenches, as seen at the Battle of Hooge. While effective, flamethrowers' gas tanks were exposed and could be ignited by gunfire or shrapnel. Chemical weapons like gas also killed over 1.3 million soldiers and 90,000 deaths during World War I. The first use of a "box barrage" artillery technique occurred at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in 1915 to limit enemy movement.
