In this presentation, I highlight the history of whaling, legal and political problems associated with the regime, and discuss several possible solutions to move beyond the current impasse.
The history of the international whaling commission
The International Whaling Commission was established in 1946 to regulate whaling and protect whale populations from overhunting. The IWC introduced measures such as whale sanctuaries, catch limits, bans on hunting certain species and sizes of whales. However, whaling nations and conservationists often disagree on management. While IWC actions such as banning non-member imports and creating sanctuaries aided recovery, overhunting still occurs and populations of some whales remain depleted. The IWC continues working to balance use and protection of whales.

Trends in Population:
The global population for this species was estimated to be 115,000 adult females in 1982. By 1996 this had been revised down to about 30-40,000. Leatherback populations in the Pacific and Indian Oceans have undergone dramatic declines in the past forty years. For example, the nesting colony at Terengganu, Malaysia went from more than 3,000 females in 1968, to 20 in 1993, to just 2 in 1993 - there are no signs of recovery.
Similar scenarios have occurred in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Mexico. Numbers of females recorded at four formerly major Pacific rookeries have declined to about 250 in Mexico, 117 in Costa Rica, two in Malaysia, and fewer than 550 in Indonesia(Anonymous, 2006)
Reproduction:
Leatherbacks mate offshore in shallow waters near the nesting area. The females dig their flask-shaped nests at night on sloping sandy beaches backed by vegetation. Six clutches can be laid in a season, with a 10-day period between nesting. The females may renest up to 7 miles from the first nest. An average clutch contains 80 to 85 eggs and incubation takes from 55 to 74 days. The 3-inch hatchlings emerge at night and head toward the ocean. The turtles reach sexual maturity at 6 to 10 years of age; the females nest every second or third year.
In the U.S., nesting occurs from about March to July. Female leatherbacks nest an average of 5 to 7 times within a nesting season, with an observed maximum of 11 nests. Most leatherbacks remigrate to their nesting beaches at 2 to 3-year intervals. (Department of energy and environmental protection, 2014)

Within the last several decades extensive egg collection and the killing of adult turtles in Indonesia has resulted in huge population declines throughout the region. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. In 1982, scientists estimated that there were 115,000 adult female leatherback sea turtles worldwide. Recent estimates have placed the number between 20,000 and 30,000 (Singh,2007).
Trends in Population:
The global population for this species was estimated to be 115,000 adult females in 1982. By 1996 this had been revised down to about 30-40,000. Leatherback populations in the Pacific and Indian Oceans have undergone dramatic declines in the past forty years. For example, the nesting colony at Terengganu, Malaysia went from more than 3,000 females in 1968, to 20 in 1993, to just 2 in 1993 - there are no signs of recovery.
Similar scenarios have occurred in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Mexico. Numbers of females recorded at four formerly major Pacific rookeries have declined to about 250 in Mexico, 117 in Costa Rica, two in Malaysia, and fewer than 550 in Indonesia(Anonymous, 2006)
Reproduction:
Leatherbacks mate offshore in shallow waters near the nesting area. The females dig their flask-shaped nests at night on sloping sandy beaches backed by vegetation. Six clutches can be laid in a season, with a 10-day period between nesting. The females may renest up to 7 miles from the first nest. An average clutch contains 80 to 85 eggs and incubation takes from 55 to 74 days. The 3-inch hatchlings emerge at night and head toward the ocean. The turtles reach sexual maturity at 6 to 10 years of age; the females nest every second or third year.
In the U.S., nesting occurs from about March to July. Female leatherbacks nest an average of 5 to 7 times within a nesting season, with an observed maximum of 11 nests. Most leatherbacks remigrate to their nesting beaches at 2 to 3-year intervals. (Department of energy and environmental protection, 2014)

It is the greatest threat for leatherback sea turtles, while they accidentally eat balloons and plastic bags floating in the water which they mistaken as jellyfish.

Overharvesting and illegal:
Egg collection on many turtle nesting beaches is a very serious threat, especially in Southeast Asia where a culture of legal egg collection leads to the removal of tens of thousands of eggs. This practice has contributed to the local extinction of leatherbacks in Malaysia. Within the last several decades extensive egg collection and the killing of adult turtles in Indonesia has resulted in huge population declines throughout the region. Despite protective legislation, many eggs produced each year in Central America are.

Todd Steiner has been involved in marine conservation since the early 1980s when he monitored sea turtle nesting populations in Florida. He founded the Sea Turtle Restoration Project in 1989 to help formalize his work with turtle biologists in Central America. The most recent Cocos Island expedition tagged 26 sea turtles, including 25 green sea turtles and 1 hawksbill sea turtle. It also began a non-invasive photo identification project for turtles. Sea turtles play an important role in stabilizing beach ecosystems and transporting nutrients, and their extinction could have unintended consequences for the marine environment and coastal communities. The Hawaiian monk seal is an endangered species found only in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. They have grey or black fur and prefer warm, sandy beaches for breeding. Their diet consists of fish, lobsters, octopuses and eels. Only one pup is born at a time each year and is nursed for about six weeks. Major threats include habitat loss from human activity and entanglement in fishing gear. Conservation efforts aim to protect breeding areas, supplement underweight pups' diets, and reduce disturbances to help increase the population, which now stands at around 1,300-1,400 individuals.

High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.

- Grateful for opportunity to speak about whale welfare and the ethics of whaling at this extremely important, progressive and productive meeting. A short introduction – who is WSPA? The world’s largest federation of animal welfare societies, with over 800 member societies in more than 147 countries. 12 offices worldwide and over 500,000 Supporters around the world. The WSPA has consultative status at both the United Nations and the Council of Europe. What does the WSPA believe? WSPA is an animal welfare organisation, not animal rights. We believe that: Animals have biologically determined instincts and needs and can experience both pain and suffering Animals should be permitted to live their lives free from avoidable suffering at the hands of humans Unnecessary animal suffering should be prevented Opposed to the killing of animals when it can be proven that it is inhumane – this is why we are here today and opposed to whaling WSPA’s vision is ‘a world where animal welfare matters and animal cruelty ends’.
