Reference letter for Mr Isaac Kenyon
Dear Sir/Madam,
I have known Isaac for the past two years of his undergraduate study in Earth Sciences, during which time I was
his second year personal tutor, taught him first and second year structural geology and accompanied him on a
field course.
Isaac is a rather quiet, thoughtful and committed student, with an obvious interest in Earth sciences. In his first
year at RHUL he scored an average of 64%, demonstrating an aptitude for, amongst other subjects,
mathematics, with a mark of 83%. His marks dipped a little in the second year as is usual, to 59% overall, but
he still achieved good scores in highly academic subjects such as igneous and metamorphic petrology (69%) as
well as more practical, transferable subjects such as field studies (60%). His modest overall marks belie his high
level of commitment to the course, and I believe he is capable of achieving a high 2-1 or a 1st
class degree next
year, with a little extra work.
Earlier this summer Isaac undertook independent field mapping in the Spanish Pyrenees, and impressed his
supervisors with his commitment and enthusiasm. Independent mapping involves substantial self-motivation,
planning, problem solving and teamwork, often in the face of physically and emotionally demanding
conditions. Isaac coped well and collected a sizeable body of data, with which he should be able to produce a
1st
class geological map later this year.
Isaac’s written and verbal communication skills are on a par with his peers. He has improved in confidence and
ability during his time here, producing a number of written reports and oral presentations, individually and as
part of a small team. Isaac is inquisitive and quick to learn new skills. He has a broad circle of friends within his
cohort, with whom he is popular and well respected. Isaac has a genial personality, is reliable, honest, and it is
my pleasure to recommend him highly.
Yours Faithfully,
Ian Watkinson.
